South Korea's anger at Japan's Challenge to Dokdo Sovereignty

South Korea would like to make public to the rest of the Model UN that Japan has once again challenged our rocky islets. We are very distressed that the Shimane prefecture on Japan's west coast have made an ordinance establishing Takeshima Day. It is not called Takeshima, the straits are called Dokdo and the territory will forever belong to us!!!

South Korea would like to commend its people, notably fve Korean college students, called “Dokdo Riders,” who have planned to embark on an diplomatic eight-month motorcycle tour of 23 countries in March and a conference in Germany where they will campaign to a larger international audience during the FIFA World Cup in an effort to enhance recognition of Korea’s sovereignty over the Dokdo islets on waters between Korea and Japan.

Tokyo is deliberately keeping a low profile, it is well known by surrounding countries that the Japanese government supports the prefectural administration’s claim to Dokdo behind the scenes. South Korea believes that the Shimane Prefecture could not have designated Takeshima Day without the consent of the central government. Tokyo’s disregard of Seoul’s sovereign right to Dokdo demonstrates the lack of action to show repentance for the crimes which old imperial Japan did to the Korean people during its 36-year colonization of the peninsula, despite its repeated lip-service-like apologies.

It doesn’t make sense that Shimane Prefecture is persistent in laying claim to Dokdo, based on its declaration of owning it on Feb. 22, 1905, the year when Japan occupied the peninsula. The possession is considered as nothing but robbery, taking advantage of the powerlessness of the Choson Kingdom at the time. Japan should have returned Dokdo to Korea when it unconditionally surrendered to the United States in 1945, putting an end to World War II. The Japanese claim to Dokdo is beyond understanding because the islet has been globally recognized as belonging to Korea from time immemorial.

We are dissappointed on the Japanese obstinate stance concerning Dokdo just as relations were between Seoul and Tokyo, were improving following Japan’s recent decision to allow Korean tourists to stay for up to three months without visas. Also, the distortion of historical facts in Japanese textbooks and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visit to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine. Those issues betrayed Japan’s pledge to promote relations with South Korea in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.

Japan ought to persuade Shimane Prefecture to scrap Takeshima Day under any circumstances, recognizing Seoul’s territorial right to Dokdo. Japanese leaders should also stop visiting the Yasukuni Shrine for the sake of Tokyo’s relations not only with Seoul but also that with China. Thats why in this case, we ask for China's support and intervention in this crisis!!!

Could South Korea clarify what Dokdo and Takeshima and how they link actually is? Because China has no idea what it just read, unfortunately

The Republic of Sierra Leone agrees with China.

South Korea would like to inform China and Sierra Leone about Japan's claim to our Southern straits in the Pacific which we call Dokdo. Japan disputes our right to this territory and has instead called 'our land' Takeshima and agin to piss us even more, have even made a Takeshima day!!

Thanks for that, China thought Takeshima was a man.

China condemns Japan for this childish move, and hopes they can recgoise Korea's soverignty over the straits.

I wish, but South Korea feels Japan has gone too far, especially with the twisting and formulating of historical facts in Japanese textbooks and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s visit to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine. Japan has much to pay for its treatment of South Korea people as well as Chinese in World War II!!

The Republic of Sierra Leone condemns disputes over minor islands. Both nations should sit down and negotiate.

Once again, Japan's nationalism threatens its position of power in East Asia. China fully supports Korean occupation of the islands, and if Korea wishes will defend the island if Japan decides to extend to the point that defense is necessary. China strongly suggests to Japan they stop laying claim to every island they invaded with war criminals they still praise today. They sound like Italy in world war one.

After years of trying, China can confirm that trying to negotiate fails to breach Japan's shield made of arrogance.

Yes, South Korea is committed and willing to disuss the on-going Dokdo affair with Tokyo. As an ally of the US like us and supposedly committed to democratic values, we are prepared to sit down ;however we do feel that the establishment in Japan should have returned Dokdo to Korea when it unconditionally surrendered to the United States in 1945. In the case of Kashmir, this is different as The Japanese claim to Dokdo is beyond understanding because the islet has been globally recognized as belonging to Korea from time immemorial. Tokyo’s disregard of Seoul’s sovereign right to Dokdo demonstrates the lack of action to show repentance for the crimes which old imperial Japan did to the Korean people during its 36-year colonization of the peninsula, and as China puts it does seem that ''Japan's sheild made of arrogance'' is not penetrable!!

Denmark agrees. We hope there is not a repeat of the Falklands war.
It is the prefecture's own decision whether to have a day called Takishema day. The Japanese Government does not consider it a priority to overrule the prefecture, if the people of Japan don't want a public day called this then they will vote out the local government. That is called democracy. Japan retains a claim to the Takishema islands and will not back down. These islands are essential for the effective defence of the Japanese mainland.

And we will quite simply not stop government visits to the Yasukini Shrine. We will honour our war dead, who died for Japan. If South Korea continues on this dangerous course on casting doubt on the democracy of Japan, and insulting our war dead, then we will have to review our close links with the country.

South Korea welcomes comments of support from China, Denmark, Russia and Sierra Leone. South Korea would like to fully explain our why the territory is ours:

Anti-Japanese sentiment has ebbed and flowed in Korea, but it is reaching a new height over the Dokdo Island dispute as Koreans across the globe are protesting Japan's latest step in its "awakened expansionism." Japan's renewed to claim to Dokdo is due in part to recent discovery of huge hydrocarbon deposits around the island!!! When I mean huge, South Korea is talking about 600 million tonnes!!!

This is not the first Korea-Japan row over the tiny island in the East Sea (Sea of Japan). During the reign of Rhee Syngman, S Korean navy vessels were dispatched to chase away Japanese intruders on the island. Rhee threatened to invade Japan - all ied with N Korea, if necessary.

Japan's claim is based on a decree made by the Prefecture of Shimane in 1905, naming the islets as Takeshima. Howver, the Yi Royal Edict No. 41 was issued in 1900 specifying that Ullung-do County Chief is to administer Ullung-do and the two islets of Chuk-do and Suk-do (Dokdo today). In 1905, the Yi Kingdom was in no position to protest against Japan which annexed all of Korea five years later.

A Japanese government shows the two islands of Matsushima (Ullung-do) and Takeshima (Dokdo) designating them as Royal Choson (Korean) territory. The Japanese Government presented this official map to US in claiming the ownership of Ogasawara island in the Pacific at the end of World War II.

According to the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), the two islands of Ullung-do and Dokdo were called Usanguk and were ruled by Isabu who paid tribute to Shilla Dynasty King Chijung (in 512 A.D.).

China supports South Korea's claim pointing out that Dokdo was a tributary to the Shilla Kingdom as far back as 512 A.D. and that Japan admitted as early as 1667 that Dokdo was a Korean territory.
