Thrush

Anyone else had really bad continous thrush for a long time? I've tried everything to get rid of it including medication that I'm on at the mo but it just won't go. It's so annoying as is really depressing and uncomfortable and don't know what to try anymore. Anyone else suffering or anyone else had severe continuous thrush and had any success in treating it?

Have you been to the doctors about it? Because it might not be thrush, it might be bacterial vaginosis becasue the symptoms are very similar. If the usual cream or pill for thrush doesn't work, i suggest you should have a smear test to find out what it is exactly

Yep wish that was answer... but been through all that ... smear test showed... hmm guess what thrush :frown: !!But pills etc. just don't work!!

O, thats really quite unusual i have to say:/
1) Ask your doctor to precribe stronger drugs. I'm sure thrush can be cured, it's just the drugs they give you. Some doctor give the mildest drug only becasue it saves their NHS:mad: . So, i suggest you should see them again and ask them to prescribe stronger drugs.
2) Maintaing a healthy lifestyle, eating properly, excercise can prevent recurring thrush

i get thrush from time to time.it's one of those things that once you've got it,you've got it. don't worry. have you tried the creams? or the pill you put up yourself? that cures it in days. whenever i feel itchy or i feel it's coming on,i use the creams and it goes. just try not to wear tight underwear and thongs a lot. or tight jeans. and don't worry :hugs::hugs:

Wear nice cotton knickers! I don't mean granny pants or anything, but you can get some really nice short-style ones from M&S: http://www.marksandspencer.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=270&Product_Id=1767493
I bought some the other week and they are so comfy and the shop had more designs than the website, really flattering. On a deal too, so £9 for 10 pairs. The reason I'm suggesting this is because cotton knickers are made from natural fibres so they are breathable and make thrush less likely to (re)occur.
Oh, and don't scratch. I know it's hard not to but you will only make yourself sore!

It's the hardest thing in the world not to scratch though! But you're right, it just makes you more sore in the long run. I think the only solution is to go back to your doctor and kick up a fuss - make sure they sort it out for you, because it's got to be gotten rid of one way or another.

Are you using the natural yoghurt cure every day as well as the tablets? It might not get rid of it but it should provide some relief.

Try Vagisil or something.

Hi.. ive also got the symptoms of thrush but it may not be thrush. do i go to the doctors first or just go straight to the GUM clinic seeing as i want to be fully checked out?

Reply 10

I think the GUM clinic wouldn't check you out fully until you'd cleared the thrush up, just because it might interfere with results etc, so probably best to try an over the counter thrush remedy first e.g. Caneston. If it doesn't clear up, then go to the doctors - they might refer you to a GUM anyway, if they think it's something that's been transmitted sexually.

Reply 11

but i dont know if it is thrush yet.. ive never had it before, im only going by what it says about the symptoms of thrush. So go to a dctr first then?

Reply 12

PLZZZZZZZ what do i do?

Reply 13

Try an over-the-counter thrush remedy - that way if it's thrush it'll be sorted, and if it's not then you'll know you need to go to the doctors.

what is thrush?

It's a yeast infection, commonly known as Candida*. It's horrid. Symptoms inlude white discharge, itchyness and getting a bit whiffy in the area.... sorry for being graphic.

It's not nice. It can be exacerbated by antibiotics, because (its my understanding) that the antis kill off the "good" bacteria as well as the bad ones you're taking the antibiotics for. It can also be caused by non cotton knickers, general irritation to the area or not wiping front to back.

You can treat it with an over the counter cream, pessary or pill - sometimes in combination.

The cream comes in a tube and you get these dinky little "syringy" things, without the rubber vacuumy bit which you fill up with cream and put it inside you like a Tampax. You have to do this everyday, for a week, depending on which brand you have. Follow the instructions. You will want to wear an ST whilst doing this unless you want your knickers stained.

Pessary is like the above, but its a cream enclosed in a dissolvable pod, like the size of a big vitamin pill. Its less messy.

The pill is a pill. *shock* Works from inside.... somehow.....

I (being the veteran I am) tend to use the combination ones. They work much faster than one method on their own - in my non medical opinion.

This is also handy if you pass it onto your boyf - which you will if you have sex with thrush or if you notice you have it the day after you've had sex with him - get him the pill and cream to shut him up!

You can go to the Doctor, which if you think you have it for the first time, is a good idea, or, as the OP has said, it won't go away with over the counter treatments like Canesten.

*My cousin is called Candida. I hate to think what happended to her at school. She's training to be a teacher too!!

It always amazes me that Candida is a name! It's like, "This is our beautiful baby daughter, Genital Warts."

I had it for the first time recently and found it excruciating. Really worried it'll come back so I'm eating probiotic yoghurts, trying to cut down on sugar, and trying to wear cotton as much as possible (pity all the prettiest pants are man made :frown: )
It's best to go to the doctors to make sure it's thrush before trying any over the counter products. If you do try the pessary, don't expect it to go away right away, it takes a few days, but it does work. Also avoid having sex til it's gone as your bf could give it you back again once it's gone, which would suck. Guys don't normally get symptoms so he wouldn't know its there.

In the answer to a pub quiz question we were told that woman over 20 get thrush on an average of twice a year. Meh :frown:

Tell me about it *so embarrassed*. My grandmother gets SO angry when people make light of it.

My ex did. You would have thought it had fallen off the hullabaloo he made about it being *so* itchy. So he took the pill and used the cream topically.
Always fun going into the chemist and saying "MayI have some Canesten" and the chemist leaning over and saying in a stage whisper " IS IT FOR THRUSH??" Of course it is you dildo. No, I enjoy feeding it to my dog and cooking carbonara with it.......

My favourite was when I went into a chemist in Australia, asked for something for thrush, and the - young, attractive - pharmacist whispered "Is it vaginal?" I think he was more embarrassed than me, actually.
