According to my sources (ok the Daily Telegraph)

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/f...n-Mandela.html

The British actor Idris Elba who played Stringer Bell in The Wire is to play Nelson Mandela in a new film.

I think Elba is an excellent actor but always got the impression from watching him in The Wire that he was quite a large chap and that Nelson Mandela is small.

Am I wrong, will he make a convincing Mandela?

I agree, despite Elba being a fantastic actor (his character alongside Omar, were some of the best to watch on The Wire), he is an odd-choice to play Nelson Mandela given the latter's build and style. I thought Morgan Freeman as Mandela was almost near perfect in Invictus, so he would probably have been the obvious choice.

loved idris in The Wire, his american accent was pretty convincing along with Jimmy McNulty's. Odd choice to play Nelson though, but his acting is pretty awesome

I would have liked to see Samuel L Jackson play Mandela, he could do badass scenes meeting the Afrikaners for talks

    - "So Mandela, you and your black terrorist frends going to give up the ormed struggle uh?"

-" Oh MOTHERFUGGER PLEASE!! I ain't a man of violence...HELL NO I ain't a man of violence...till you apartheid motherfuggers put yo police all over my ass"

He's cracking in everything I've seen him in (and I've seen all of The Wire and Luther). Mandela's a completely different role but I reckon he'll pull it off.

What about Will Smith? You seem to just be suggesting random black actors now.

In that case, I nominate.... Uncle Phil.

    nah

I assme this new film is about his younger days. Bit hard for someone who looks 60 to play a 30year old.

If it was down to appearance alone, this guy would have landed it

Er no. Denzel is more of the right build, an excellent actor, and IMO looks more like Mandela.

I find the insinuation of a racist "they all look alike" train-of-thought offensive.

I don't need to be a sub to know that it was you who negged me.. Childish.

Who the hell wants to see Denzel play him? He is way too famous and it will be hard to get past the fact that it is Denzel. This is one reason why some films resort to using lesser known actors.

There are plenty of great black actors out there who aren't as known.

Ooh a "sub" are you really underwater right now  ?
I started this thread on a positive note because I like Elba as an actor and was interested to know what others thought of the casting in this new film.
But like many other dip****s on this forum you fly in here with the smart-ass attitude and supercritical comments but manage to get upset when someone negs you for it and you call me childish?

"It's why some films resorts to using lesser known actors"
Oh really and no one has seen The Wire have they? And no one is going to be thinking - "ooh isn't that Stringer Bell, wasn't he like a massive crime lord?"

Can no one be nice here?
