Am really worried, found my first grey hair today AT 17!!! Does anyone know any of the symptons of grey hair (mine seems to be concentrated in one particular area which I blow dry a lot), or any methods of prevention? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
I can sympathise entirely with you- it runs in my family from my mother's side and I found my first one when I was about thirteen.
Hair gets its colour from the pigment cells inside the hair follicle (the tissue under the skin at every root) and the melanin they produce. Grey hairs occur when less pigment is produced for whatever reason. This often happens when you get older, simply because the cells in your body start to become less efficient etc. but of course it can happen at any age.
I gather you've got fairly dark hair? My hair's brown, and of course the greys show up fairly well if you look for them, due to the great contrast in colour. But actually, people with blonde hair are just as likely to have patches of hair with less pigment, they just don't notice it because the contrast isn't so great.
The point is, lots of people have a few grey hairs. They're just where there is a lack of pigment, just people with lighter hair don't notice it so much. If you only noticed it today, I'm sure it can't be that obvious, and I doubt other people would have noticed. Sadly we are often quickest to see our own supposed flaws, and most of the time everyone else is just worrying about their own too.
There are some great dyes out there, and if you're not so keen about dyeing your whole head, you could get some lighter highlights to make the contrast less great. You're not alone though, and if anyone ever does notice, just freak them out by saying they probably have a few grey hairs too, they just can't see them so well.

I've had grey hairs since i was 13... I don't really understand what you mean by "symptoms" though - it's just genetic and as far as i know there is no cause. Just have to put up with it i'm afraid! I don't have many - my hair is definitely still brown! - but they are fairly noticeable if i haven't dyed it for a while...my friends all think it's really cool though so there you go! (i still just dye over it though!)
ETA: also, it comes in very handy when i have highlights put in as they cover the roots quite nicely!

i think its hereditary. i know a few folk aged between 15-24 who have started greying. it might also be stress cos i pulled out a grey hair last year whn i had alot of stress. the only thing is dye it.
can be genetic too. I have a friend my age (18) who has LOADS of white hair under her dark brown hair. it's like, you see her with dark hair but when you flip her hair, it's white/grey underneath.
I agree, it's nothing to worry about. I've had a few grey hairs since I was fourteen, and they're fairly obvious since my hair's dark. You could dye them, but I'd advise against plucking them out, it's a habit I have and it just looks worse when the shorter grey hairs growing back. Anyway, don't worry about it, it's really quite common and you probably won't start going properly grey for many years.
i get grey hairs every 2-3 months. a guy i know, a single rectangular patch on his hair just went grey ovenight. dont worry about it. grey hair is sexy if u are a guy, and on girls u can just pluck it
Yes, I'm a bit scared of that, to be honest, my grey hair hasn't started multiplying yet but it's only a matter of time if I can't kick the habit. Seriously kids: don't pluck them.
