Nice rash and all-body itching...fun

OK. Ow. Yesterday at about lunchtime, my neck sorta started itching, and I assumed it was from my scarf which i only got recently and hardly ever wore. So i took it off, but throughout the day it got progressively worse. I went to work where it's quite hot and it got really bad then, and my whole body started to itch and sorta rashes appear, like if you'd scratched yourself lots.

So I got home, attempted to try and sleep (haven't though really) and I've woken up and it's as bad as ever. Ow ow ow. It feels sorta like an allergic reaction but I can't think what to. Is it possible that a reaction around your neck from clothing can spread all around your body?

Before anyone asks, I have not:

- Eaten anything unusual recently
- got any other symptoms
- taken any medication recently

I did that little glass test thing and it does go white if you poke it. There isn't always a rash, but it still itches literally everywhere there is skin. Even my head. Ow.

I would appreciate any comments, coz my little head is going to explode soon! Even if its a guess, and you have as much medical knowledge as a water-vole. Thankies!

Have you changed your washing powder recently?

It could be washing powder soap shampoo or even someone who's touched and they had it on them. It could also be taht you've become allergic to a product (I have this problem a lot) best thing to stop itching is eurex but i'm not sure if you can buy it over the counter. Personally as soon as the itching starts I just have some piriton but you should check with your pharmacist/dr first. For now have a really long cold shower (I know not the nicest thing but does the trick) and that should reduce the hives and put on clean clothes. Have stuff to eat and drink but stick to basic foods like bread pasta and not things with lots of possibles in like peanut butter that way if it is a food allergy it will be easier to pin point if you get another reaction today.

If at any point your lips go blue or feel tingly, or you feel as though it's getter harder to breathe or your tongue swells up get yourself to the dr or a and e but make sure someone takes you!!!!!!!!

Hope you find out what it is, and I promise it will stop itching soon!!

Heh thanks, I think my parents are loading me with a load of drugs n stuff, looks like it might be urticaria. I haven't changed my washing powder either, so hmmm.

Could be a particulary nasty heat rash. Last summer my mom thought I'd got chicken pox (again) because of the way it came up. I literally was bathing in cold water for about 2 hours before it even started to go away.

Vicious, horrible thing!

I have urticaria it's all fun and games from here on in I'm afraid! One piece of advice if it is....don't start out with the heaviest anti histamines like piriton if you end up like me. I find that after a year they stop working so move up to the next one, I'm on piriteze and that's it there isn't anything else. I started on clarityn then zirtek telfast benadryl......but I'd go to your dr and see what he says. It might well be that you've become allerigic to something tho - I suddenly become allerigic to things due to the type of urticaria I have. Just been given an epi pen woooooooo!! Good luck hun, hope you don't get it badly, and while they may tell you not to itch it does make you feel better lol

Urticaria is lots of fun! It's suometimes goes after 2 weeks, so you might be one of the lucky ones. Mine took about 8 months to go, but almost a year later I'm fine, apart from I'm paranoid everytime I get red lumps or start to itch!

Calamine lotion is great, except you'll end up with dried white streaks all over. And see your doctor.

You're not planning any piercings are you? Because one doctor I saw said mine was caused by a piercing I had 2 months after I got urticaria! I never saw him again as he wasn't nice.

Oh god i seriously hope it doesn't last that long. My god i'm scared now. It hurts so much!

I'm sure it will be fine if it's that bad they'll prob stick you on a course of prednesolone to help take it down. How does it hurt? Mine doesn't usually hurt unless i really scratch it..... Calomine (sp....) is good but this Eurax that I was given is great and lasts for about 8-10hrs depending on how itchy I get. Aloe gel sometimes helps, or the hydrocortisone (can't spell today!) 1% majiggy is good I hear. Best thing tho is to see if you can go to a walk in clinic today and get something strong to take it away then go see your GP to get a longer term plan. I'm sure it won't last long don't worry, worrying can like other things mess up your recovery period so just chill get people to look after you - great excuse to do nothing!

From what my doctor said, most urticaria clears up within 2 weeks. Of those that aren't so lucky, most then go on to suffer for less than 6 months.

But when you've settled down into a routine of taking your antihistamines you'll feel so much better! With mine, I was on twice the normal dose of antihistamines and I took one in the morning and one at night. Mostly, my blobs disappeared too, except for when I was getting used to my antihistamines and needed to change.

Do explain it to your friends, as you'll need lots of support. One of mine discribed me as looking "like a burns victim" when it was particularly bad, and once I was on the bus and it was full but no one wanted to sit next to me :bawling:

awwww you poor thing. Did they not put you on steroids to take it away quicker? I find that they always help. I don't get hives so much now just in the inital period then I'm just itchy for weeks and weeks and I'n sure people who don't know me think i've got fleas.......!! I'd sit next to you on a bus!

It just itches like a bitch. I've taken a thingy of piriton and have covered myself with calamine cream and that's helped lots already actually. I am soo not looking forward to dealing with this at school on monday!! Thankfully it'snot on my lower arms or my face so should be able to cover it up. I was wearing a scarf at work yesterday as my entire neck looked like it'd been sunburnt and everyone kept saying 'are you cold'. Couldn't be arsed to explain so I just said' yes. yes i am.'

Thanks for making me feel slightly less panicked! It just really itches to the point where it's like unbearable.

Well, with mine I was fine on some white tablets with a long name, but I moved to go to uni and then had to see some other doctor. He insisted I was allergic to the piercing I'd got 2 months after I got urticaria, and swapped me to some blue tablets. And then I just totally flared up and instead of being white with red blotches I was red with white blotches!

I went to the doctors in the middle of the day to beg another appointment, and as soon as the receptionist saw me she gave me one straight away!

white? were they anti histamines? the prednisolone are usually red little tablets. A lot of drs are funny about urticaria my ones back home basically unless you were in anaphalatic shock and about to die didn't think there was anything wrong with you, as soon as I came to uni however the dr here said 'why on earth did they not give you an epi pen???!!! ' and he's sorted me out .... love my dr now!! Might be an idea to see if you can get a different dr...?

They were antihistamines of some sort. The brand name had an X and a Y in.

I'm fine now (hopefully) but I never did go back to the evil doctor again! Luckily, at the same practice was a really good doctor who was super.

We should sooo start a club for those of us COOL enough to have urticaria

Oooh this is weird. I took 3 lots of piriton, the last one on saturday night. I woke up sunday morning, took a homeopathic remedy, haven't been eating dairy, and I haven't had ANY symptoms since saturday! Does this mean it's properly gone away?! This seems unusually fast...

Reply 17

Well, keep your fingers crossed!

But mine did come and go at first, so don't get too excited.

Reply 18

Yeah I'm still a bit cautious, but I do feel completely normal again thank the lord. Am going to keep off the dairy as I think that is what triggered it.

Reply 19

Yes sometimes it does clear up that fast...woooo!!! Bet you're feeling a lot better! Hmm dairy allergies are not fun, maybe see if you can get patch tests....or was there a specific product you ate a lot of last week eg a certain cheese? maybe it was something in that that made you react and hopefully not dairy! Good luck
