Hey guys,

I dont get the link between the absorption of infrared radiation by bonds in CO2, methane and water vapour and global warming..

Its in the spec for AQA CHEM2, and I dont really understand it

Thanks

IR radiation can be thought of as heat rays. You absorb 'em and get hotter.

Light coming in from the sun contains a relatively small amount of IR radiation, however when the surface of the earth re-emitts the radiation (as IR) is it absorbed by greenhouse gases such as co2 and h2o

The Greenhouse Effect of a given gas depends on both its atmospheric concentration and it's ability to absorb infrared radiation.

CO2, methane, water vapour and global warming are greenhouse gases because the chemical bonds in their compound absorb the infrared radiation re-emitted from the Earth.
