I got my nose pierced about 6 weeks ago, I changed the stud after 4 weeks (which was a pretty traumatic procedure) but the stud was too big and it kept getting caught on things, so about a week later I tried to change it to a smaller one which seemed to scratch the inside of the piercing and it bled a bit, so I ended up having to change it back to the original nose screw by which point my nose was throbbing and it felt like I had to re-pierce a layer of skin inside my nostril. That side of my face ached for about a day after that.
So, I'm now pretty sure that I've caused quite a bit of damage to my nose. I have a bump inside my nostril (which was there before I changed the nose screw the first time) which doesn't really hurt to touch (with clean hands!) but while I used to be able to pull the screw out a little bit to clean it, it's just too painful to do that now and my whole nose throbs. I'm really worried about this. Is it a a keloid? I really don't think it's infected because it only hurts when I move the stud and it isn't swollen or producing any pus or gunk. It isn't bleeding either. Sorry for the length of this but I thought all the facts would help!

The bump you have is hypertrophic scarring, its caused by the irritation your talking about it should go away if you remove your stud, i would go see your piercing specialist to get it checked out.

Thanks for your answer, would scarring really be this painful though? I can't move the stud at all without it hurting waaay more than it did getting it pierced. I'll be going back to the piercing place this weekend, just wanted to know what to expect. Pretty sure the reason for this pain is actually a new bump. I noticed the first bump after about 3 weeks and it hurt a tiny bit and felt spongy and is the same colour as the rest of the skin around it. The new bump (no idea how long it's been there but I'm guessing since I changed the stud back) is bright pink, though because moving the stud makes my whole nose hurt i can't really tell where the pain is coming from exactly, but I'm guessing it's the new, bright pink and actually tiny, bump.

what you need is compression to prevent the scarring and compress the lump. what i did was put in a normal earring (thin gauge), that was button shaped (so large) and with a big back. put it on tight (really make sure the back and front are big) and this will compress the lump down. yeh youll look a bit funny, but do this at home while watching tv and it'll go pretty quick.

Your piercing hurts because you changed the jewellery repeatedly before it was healed.

If the jewellery in there is good quality (preferably titanium, and not too tight or with too much extra length) then leave it in and stop moving the jewellery. Do regular sea salt soaks and chamomile tea bag compresses.

You need to keep the original stud in for quite a while, I'd say about 8 weeks at least. I left mine in for 3 months.

I washed it every day with warm salty water. Don't touch it.

I think your piercing might just be rather irritated. After all, it has had a needle pushed through it.

Did you get it done using a gun? I've heard of people getting irritated noses more often from a gun than through a needle

I know the problems post having a nose pierced.

Considering it takes among the longest to heal after having it done, the best advice (I think someone already said this) is to not move the piercing itself if you can help it. But seeing you have replaced the jewellery it's going to take longer.

Keep it clean and don't move it around any more.

thanks for all the answers, I'll just leave it and keep up with the sea salt soaks. and yes it was pierced with a needle, it was fine until i changed it so i blame myself entirely for all this! :P though the piercer did tell me i could change it after 3 weeks which i think was pretty bad advice!

mine was the same for 2 - 3 months after i got it pierced. Make sure you get a stud that is made of metal (preferably gold or silver and that reduced the infection for me. Regularly clean the area with the solution you got from the person who pierced it or; boil some water and let it cool down to use instead.
If it doesnt go away after another month, see a doctor

You should not change it for at least two more months - and then only if it is properly healed. Right now the wound is still healing internally and you can risk delaying that healing process or cause infection by changing the jewellery too soon

Use tea tree and sea salt after care!! Soak it after u bump or accidentally snatch out your nose ring and the bump will disappear very quickly! I had mines almost a year and it still hurt and get a bump if I bump it or pull it out but I soak it with a cotton ball and it leaves immediately and soothes the pain as well! I keep a bottle of this stuff which work wonders for any piercings. Amazon $11 and worth it!!
