Your weight really isn't anyone's business but your own. Including your parents. How about, instead of doing what they suggest, you tell them exactly how cruel they've been, undermining their own child's self-esteem like that.

Your weight is fine.

Reply 22

Really if I were you I would listen to your parents.
what I mean is I don't look overweight but have a bit too much flab

This sounds like fatness.
I actually want to die now - how the hell am I gonna lose 10 pounds?

Go on hunger strike until your mum takes it back?

I don't knoooow! But if it says I should, and my parents think I should, then I obviously have to don't I!

*Begins diet*

Your being a bit dramatic. You dont sound fat at all, if your still uncomfortable then do some exercise, but it doesnt seem like you need to diet. Dont trust the BMI website- if your really worried go to a nurse and check.
As for your mum agreeing, I constantly get told to lose weight- doesnt stop me from eating  - dont freak out completely go see your GP or nurse

don't let numbers or figures get you down, eat well, sleep well, exercise normally, no more no less. Don't waste time thinking about criticism based on the figures, more important to stay healthy, and happy. Don't worry what others think on superficial matters.

BMI is a really imprecise measurement of whether someone's overweight or not. It doesn't account for amounts of muscle (which ways a more than fat) etc., and is therefore famous for saying various athletes and hollywood actors are overweight or obese (eg. Brad Pitt). Just measuring height and weight is too simplistic, especially as you've said you do a lot of exercise. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index#Problems Also, you've found this information on the internet. You could probably find another website that would tell you something totally different.

From what you've said, you sound totally normal for someone your age. As long as you continue to eat a healthy balanced diet and exercise, your weight will stay in a range that's right for you.

What sounds worrying to me is not your weight or eating/exercising habits or BMI (these all sound fine) but your mum's comments and the effect they're having on your body image. Is it possible she has body image issues she's passing on to you? It's important you tackle THE WAY YOU FEEL about your body rather than the way your body looks if this is making you feel depressed. I find exercise really useful for this as it helps me to focus on what my body can do rather than how it looks. Do you have someone trustedyou can talk to IRL about these issues other than your mum, who is clearly giving you bad advice? If not, is there a school counsellor or someone you could go to? Your body sounds healthy, but feeling suicidal about it is not.

Inspired by that stomach-measurement thread I went on that website where you calculate BMI, waist measurement etc etc.

And was horrified when it told me I should lose 10 pounds even though I'm in the healthy weight range  :frown: :frown: :frown:

And was suicidal when my mum told me she completely agrees!   :frown: :frown: :frown: :frown: :frown: :frown:

I don't consider myself particularly overweight...I'm 17, 5"5 and just under 10 stone - is this too fat for a girl my age and height?

I actually want to die now - how the hell am I gonna lose 10 pounds? :frown:

BMI's are notoriusly ***** as an absolute indicator of health - for a start it uses wieght, not adiposity (amount of fat), and so doesn't take into account muscle etc.

At 17 you should not be considering dieting unless you are obese, which clearly you aren't... Your body is going through so many changes at the moment, that starving yourself could lead to long term health implications.

If you are really worried, discuss it with your GP.

BMI isn't really accurate, but staying healthy is always good. Lets face it, if even your mum thinks you are fat, you probably are.

Hey don't worry.... i am worried about me because i am starting to lose weight rapidly!:frown: you are perfect weight because the BMI you have used may be wrong! the Bands that they are fitted in to are absurd and a health thingy person said that the boundaries are two low!
I am 5ft 10 and recently my weifght has dropped to below 10 stone.... i am now 9st 11 when only friday i was 10st 5 and i am 16.so don't worry about your weight because worring is bad for the health..... every day hen you wake up say to yourself.... " i am perfect for who i am i was made tis way and should not question why"

Reply 35

BMI and all that is a piece of crap, you're best weight is whatever suits you, and you should be happy about it!

I think that is a bit harsh...... My Step dad says i am fat.... but i still weigh less than 10 Stone so parents are there to make you feel self conscious..... it is almost psychological test.... they are most probably trying to see your reaction to something because they are trying to show you how life is really like! i know very welll because my parents are complete pigs!

It's actually a really good piece of advice. I do worry about the number of people, children especially, who diet because of what others say to them. As long as people follow a healthy diet and exercise, then they really shouldn't worry. However, I do know that it is easy to say, but is not always easy to follow.
