Lemsip Max Strength usually works well, although it's designed for the 'flu so it might be regarded as overkill.

if you don't like the taste of Lemsip try the Lemsip flu capsules - i use these whenever i have a cold and they work really well

Or put a shot of whiskey/splash of port in. Possibly some honey too. Masks the harsh edge to the taste, helps your throat and, well, does whiskey need a reason?

Really random, but my friend swears by this. Half a glass of coke, (has to be proper coca cola!) and half a glass of boiling water.
Crush as much garlic as you can stand and eat it raw on toast. Yes, you will stink, but it does work.

Or get some echinacea herbal tincture (not the capsules, it's liquid stuff in a small brown bottle) and at the first sign of a cold drink water with a few drops added several times a day.
Im afraid theres nothing out there that cures a cold (whoever invents it will be an overnight millionaire), just things to help ease the symptoms, eg. plenty of fluids, paracetamol (reduces any fever) and decongestants if your nose is stuffy.
