Counselling

Basically, without going into it all there are alot of problems going on in my life at the moment, and I really feel like I need to talk to someone about it - maybe get some advice about how to deal with it/some of it. But really just want to get some of it of my chest.

I am at uni now (Nottingham Uni) and I know that they have a counselling service. I wanted to ask though, does anyone know, is it all kept private, would your doctor know for example. Would it go on any uni records or medical records etc. I will be applying for something in a year or so time, and I can't have any extra stuff on my medical records, and I don't want to be seen as having had counselling. This is what has put me off going to see my doctor before about getting any help.

Also, I take it that everything I tell them will be kept private, even though some of it is related to problems and uni (and some stuff at home.)

Thanks for your help!

Your GP would probably know as you would be best advised to talk to him/her with a view to seeing someone else. Beyond that I'm fairly certain that no-one would know who you didn't want to.

unless you're a considerable risk to yourself or others, confidentiality is always kept with councillers

i'm not sure if it does go into your medical records however. but it's against the law [DDA] for anyone to discriminate against you because you have seen a counciller, the same way they couldn't discriminate against you if you had a physical problem

Its all kept private, uni counselling won't go on your medical records either. Everything you tell a counsellor is confidential, unless you disclose something meaning you or others are at serious risk. If your counsellor did have to tell an outsider something about you, they would tell you first. They are also obliged to tell the police if you discuss something to do with terrorism, or something along those lines by law. I don't know what you're applying for in the next year, but even if it did go down on your records you wouldn't be discriminated against- it would be seen as a postive sign as you're dealing with the problem and as long as you can say that you've dealt with it and it won't hinder your work then you'll be fine.

My mum is a pyschotherapist and sees people at Notts Uni, amongst other things! If you wana know anything specific, just PM me.
