Why are the scottish refered to as the jocks?
Because of our affinity for the certain type of strap.
Because it was a fairly common nickname up here at one point. Just like how the English/British managed to get called 'Tommies' in the wars...
i've heard of the limeys but tommies??
Because of the English use of Tommy guns.
Tommy guns we're American.. And weren't used until WW2. It's probably because it's just a very common British name. We used to call Germans 'Fritz' - one can only assume its because Fritz was seen as a very stereotypical German name.
It's a stereotyping thing. People think Jock is a common Scottish name (a variant of Jack) so you have Jock Tamson with his kilt, sporran, full shebang, white shirt thing (****, how terrible, I can't remember the name) and his tartan tammy tourie on his ginger mop. See?
