Quality of tap water

I'm quite concerned about the quality of the tap water in our house. When you first open a tap and take a glass full, the water is actually quite mirky and is not clear at all. I'm not saying it's like toilet water or anything, it's not exactly brown but it's not clear if you look at it under a light. However, if you leave the tap running for about 20 seconds then it has more or less crystal clarity and there are no apparent issues with it.

Does anybody else have mirky water as soon as they turn it on? Do you think it's safe to drink this tap water?

Why are you posting as anonymous?
Different areas of the country have harder or softer water than other areas.
Harder water tends to occur in the south-east and the water tends to run clear (in my experience - it's where I've spent most of my life).
Water is at its softest in the north and the west, varying throughout the rest of the country. I'm at uni in the SW of England and here the water comes out cloudy and to me it tastes strange too.
It won't kill you to drink it, but I prefer to use a Brita filter to drink nice clear water
Each to their own.

Ah this makes sense. Thanks. Cloudy is the word to describe it that I was looking for.

I'm anonymous in case this only happened to me and I'd have found it quite embarassing.
have you tried it yet? has it killed you? stop being fussy! ;-)

My water does it at home too (im from SE). Dont worry about it, i just leave the tap running like you do and its fine. Its definately safe!
embaressing to have cloudy water! right...

It doesn't seem harmful but I was just a bit concerned about any possible long term damage, seeing as I'm trying to drink 8 glasses a day.
That's not true. Water in Yorkshire is some of the hardest in the country. It's the reason there are so many cases of kidney stones in this area, because the water has filtered through limestone and other hard rocks. Your water could be cloudy if there has been a burst pipe in the area. The water company aerates the water to kill any bacteria which may have entered the pipeline through the crack. This causes the water to look cloudy.

Away with your fancy science! It be the work of the Devil! Kidney stones are the work of God, to strike down the heathen masses that reside in Yorkshire!

How did I know you'd say that? You are merely the Grasshopper to my Sensei. Begone underling!

Anyway, it's not the area itself that matters. Fact is, water hardness/softness varies throughout the UK, and therefore different areas of the country have different-looking/tasting water coming out of their taps.
So, original poster, you can stop being anonymous now..

UK tap water actually has stricter standards and testing procedures than bottled water. But if you're worried, then either filter it or boil it first

I hear toilet waters cleaner then tap water. (When it's flushed obviously.)

I can see the anonymous button being abused here...

Run it for about 10 seconds first, it should clear up.

The biggest thing top be worried about is lead. If you have leaded pipes the lead can get into the water, this can cause brain problems and memory loss.

yeah. britta filters are great

dont leave you water running. you'll be the cause of the water ban for that and i'll be very angry with you!! i dont want to not have showers and baths for months!!!!! maybe that's why they're anonymous
we have a amazingly murky water in my house. even if you run it it doesn't clear up....i dont think its even drinkable :puke: well unless you boil it... or have one of those filter jugs

Yeah, it's most likely air in the water - we had that problem at my old school. It's perfectly drinkable  Bit of a pain in science experiments though...
Yeah its just really tiny bubbles of air making it look cloudy...that's why it's clear after a while. If it was anything else it wouldn't just disappear like that!
