15 year old with National Insurance card - which jobs can i be employed for?

Hi all.

Basically, last week my NI card came. I want to get a job as soon as possible..i'm currently in Year 11, I am 15 (16 in May). I was just wondering can I start applying at places because I have my NI card or do i have to wait till I am actually 16 (please don't say i have to :frown: )

What kind of companies do you think would employ me, and which have a reputation for paying well (£4 and over for me would be "well paid"). I have emailed Debenhams this very minute explaining my situation.

I am after a job preferably in Electronics (such as Dixons), wouldn't mind departmental. I would rather not work in clothes shops, but shops such as Burton with a more relaxed feel doesn't sound too bad.

Hope you can help me  cheers all

Generally it'll depend on the company's policy as to whether or not they'll employ you while you're still 15. I know Waterstones don't mind as long as you've got a NI card because I went and asked there shortly after I got my NI card! Some places though, like HMV, don't employ people who are under 18.

Thanks for the reply  Do you know how much Waterstones pay..doesn't seem *too* bad a job i suppose better than being rushed off your feet doing stuff i suppose.

So what exactly do you do: just go into the store..and ask whom exactly?

any job in retail is going to cause you "rush you off your feet"
get some work experience before you apply for anything really. cause at my work people with no qualifications and no experience dont even get considered....

I applied for a job in Boots when I was 16. The only work experience I'd had was babysitting for my parents friends and my work experience placement from school. Out of about 400+ applicants, I got chosen for an interview and was eventually given a job. I'd had no retail experience, so it depends on where you apply.

To the OP - I don't know how much Waterstone's pay. I never worked there, just asked about a job. Just go in, ask a memeber of staff if they have any jobs going, if they say yes then ask how you should apply and if they say no then it's unlucky really. Most places aren't looking now because it's right after Christmas and everyone's just got rid of their Christmas staff.

Standing round in the retail sector. ROFL

Most places pay 16-18 year olds £4 plus per hour

Most places also demand that you have finished your GCSEs before starting work. But dont let that put you off

not really. it was a couple of thousand for about 7-10 jobs
for some reason people want to work there... i did back in the day...

People who are saying you need previous experience showing you are responsible eg babysitting - i'm sure I can just put that on my CV and they won't question it?!

in my experience, if you REALLY want a job, just send of letters to everywhere. mine literally said:

"hello, i am shaun. i would like a job. i am hard working and dilligent. please reply."

then eventually, i got a reply, and got a job. didn't make no fancy CV thingy, indeed when you're 15, with absolutely nothing to put on it, i'd imagine it'd look pretty stupid.

Hey all, just made a CV: my mum rang around today and WHSmiths said they would take me on even though i'm 15 and to drop off a CV. And to 'chewwy' yes a 15 year old can have plenty to put on: hence mine is 1 and a half pages long

...prob best if you ring up yourself, its hard to convince someone that you would be good at dealing with customers if you're too shy and ask your mum to ring them up in the 1st place!

It was a new store. Therefore, a lot of positions to fill.

you need to put on references who will back you up you know
A 15 year old needs to put the following on his/her CV

2 Referees

Interests and achievements - put that so you can include stuff where you don't get an award.
