Does anyone have Crohn's Disease?

If so, please tell me how long it took to get diagnosed, what your symptoms are like and how you cope with them. My GP referred me to a gastroenterologist who is a total jerk and basically said that it was all in my head and I have an image problem. If abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea etc. is in my head then I guess he's calling me a s*** face?! My parents want me to go and get another referral from the GP ('cos I'm over 16) for a private consultation but I'm not sure I can cope with any more abuse from people in 'the caring profession'... I'm not even sure it is Crohn's, just stuff I've googled sounds familiar to varying extents.

I don't have it and all I really know is my 50 yr old aunt has just had a colostomy bag fitted. They said if she didn't she'd get cancer within 5 years

But that's probably just for the older people it affects.

I hope you get to see another doctor. I'm not sure if Crohn's can affect young people though?
It can affect young people. When I was in Year 9, a lad in my form was diagnosed with it...

As with anything in this country, you need to "push" the GP into getting the help you need and don't stop pushing until you get that help. Call the guy often and make yourself a pest if need be, because most GP's are trying to cut corners to save money. I have been through something else with the same results as you have had and only got the help/support after I pushed like 'ell.

Anastacia, the singer has the disease, there may be stuff on her website

My girlfriend was diagnosed with Crohn's two years ago. AS you probably already know from research, Crohn's disease is a deficiency of the human immuno system, more specifically, your body's natural defences fight any foreign body that enters the digestion system, hence vomiting, diarrhoea etc. Malnutrition also is an effect, so bodyweight drops dramatically. My girlfriend ended up in an annorexic state before she was persuaded to visit the doctor. Steroids are used to control the symptoms, to build up your bodyweight, and to stop your antibodies fighting unnecessarily. My girlfriend now has several diseased sections of her intestine, but leads a very normal life (apart from taking medication every day) and has a normal life expectancy. If you think you may have Crohn's, i suggest you ditch your lack of faith in the GP, as it can prove fatal if it is not caught in time. But without putting the fear of the reaper on you, do you regularly experience blackouts when vomiting or when your bowel just can't take anymore? Also, have you ever thought it may be IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)? Do some more research and visit the GP as soon as possible. My e-mail is available, or use the PM service if you wish to talk some more to me.

regards

Chris

All I know that Daryl Palumbo, my favourite singer ever - member of Glassjaw and Head Automatica - suffers from this and as such can't tour. :frown:

One of my friends was diagnosed wth crohns 2 years ago when she was 19. The exact same thing happened to her, she kept going to the G.P's with all these symptoms (we even thought she was anorexic/bulimic for a while) and the gp kept saying there's nothing wrong and it's just due to stress/all in her head. But she got so bad she couldn't take it and her parentd took her to see a private consultant and was diagnosed with crohn's and had loads of tests done and medication that helped immensley. She was told not to eat certain foods which i think helps and she is also on a cocktail of medication including steriods. She does lead a normal life though, although she can't drink due to her meds.

My aunt was also diagnosed with it when she was in her 20's. I would say either go back to your gp and ask to be referred to a doctor that deals with digestive/or intestinal problems (can't think of the name) or go see a private consultant because if it is crohns or another disease you need to get treated asap...be persistant don't let them tell you there's nothing wrong if it clearly is!

Good luck x

Hi everyone, thanks for posting back. Maybe I didn't explain it right? My GP's pretty alright it's the specialist she sent me to who's the w***er. I've lost like 2 stone (and I was only a size 10 to start with), I can't eat any animal fats (including all dairy) without being violently sick and fainting/getting diarrhoea and I get really bad abdominal pains and diarrhoea when I eat any fruit at all or if I eat vegetables that haven't been cooked to death (really mushy like). I feel really awkward about seeing my GP again and asking for yet another referral just 'cos I don't like the specialist I'm under at the moment. I hope it's not crohn's but if it is it's good to know that people manage to have a fairly normal life with it. Thanks again.

Sounds to me more like you've developed some major food intolerances than Crohn's disease- Crohn's doesn't typically cause vomiting, and it sounds as though your symptoms relate closely to what you've just eaten. I'd definitely go back to your GP and tell them how useless the specialist was- and maybe ask them about being tested for food allergies. But you should definitely push to make sure Crohn's is tested for- symptoms like this shouldn't be ignored if there's a chance it could be something serious.
