'Rahs' at newcastle?

OK im getting worried cos every time I read any forum about Newcastle lots of people comment on how there a a very large number of stuck up, arrogant public school types. I will NOT fit in with these type of people which makes me apprehensive about going to Newcastle...:frown:

Yes there are many Rahs here, but there are also many normal people too. Don't not choose Newcastle just because of the Rahs. There will be Rahs everywhere in the UK! You can choose who you like to spend time with so can live your years here never conversing with any Rahs at all! Do not panic

yeah there are alot of rah's but like the previous poster said, its easy enough to make friends who are more like yourself. Castle leazes is the worst, maybe just avoid that, having said that I stay there and none of my friends are rahs.

Why would a particular hall of residence attract those type of people?

Right screw it I might just go Northumbria

There are probably a lot more rahs at Durham, however it has absolutely no bearing on your enjoyment of uni

I can't bear rahs and I can pretty much guarantee there are more here and on my course. Solution: Mix with people you get on with.

Lol, one problem with the poly is you ll lose all ability to spell tho!!! :p: newcastle is a great city which you ll appreciate at either uni, but dont be put off by references to rahs at the uni. if you dont get on with them, dont mix with them, and join in with an increasingly popular sport of rah spotting/bashing!! Its good fun, and offers a productive distraction in lectures.

I would advise avoiding castle leazes when looking at accomodation, but with everything else you ll be far enough away to live a long and happy uni life - especially at ricky road (not a rah in sight). Trust me, there are alot more povs (the rah word for us non-rah ruffian types) than rahs.

Aye Rahs are everywere tbf though not all the posh kids are stuck up etc some of em or a reet laugh but most speak down to you etc but screw em who cares, Newcastle is quality dont let the rahs put you off, plenbty of normal down to earth people here, although apply for accomodation soon as and get in Ricky road best place to avoid rahs!

yeh dont be put off by the rah's, ull find loads of people who hate them and u can hate them with, whilst castle leazes has alot its not that you have to mix with them, like i said, just be mates with people you like and get on with as there will be plenty. you will also find that rah's go to certain places and everyone else goes others, e.g avoid the lounge on a tuesday!

Are you going Newcastle or Northumbria?

Thing is I really do think the course at Northumbria is much better for me...

There are a fair few Rahs at Newcastle. I came here from a Comprehensive in the Midlands, so I had never had any contact with Rahs whatsoever. But I find I get on with some Rahs, not with others; likewise, I get along just great with some non-Rahs, and not with others.

TBH, I think the whole "I can't get on with any Rahs whatsoever" is a pretty narrow view. Rahs can be stuck up and arrogant, but many of them are nice people - maybe a bit well-spoken, or they come from richer families, but there's no reason at all as to why you shouldn't get on with them

Unless of course, you go to Uni with the view "I will not get along with any rahs..." in which case you probably won't, but it won't be because of how they are.

just curious but can anyone explain why public school type ppl are called rahs?
Because the stereotypical public school image is one where everyone talks like 'rah rah rah, yars, yars, I quite agree, rah rah, gawd look at that pleb'.
comes from hurrah...jolly good etc etc
