Kingston, Nottingham trent or UWE Bristol?

Hi just needed some advice which university to choose i have offers from all three and i'm stressing which one to choose (this is for graphic design by the way).

Kingstons course sounds great and really ideas based and the tutors sound like they will help and be around a lot. But because i've lived in london all my life i kinda want something different, so i'm not too sure.

UWE bristol's course sounds quite good not as good as Kingstons but i think i would have fun there, the facilities are good too and the people seem really friendly.

Nottingham trent is pretty much in the same boat as uwe sounds like a good course maybe not quite as good for me as kingston but friendly tutors and a city where i know i will enjoy myself, not as good facilities though.

thanks for any responses.

Trent is amazing for an ex poly! But Kingston is much better for creative courses

Kingston has an amazing reputation for the creative arts. I'm based down near UWE at the moment and the general consensus is that the quality of the courses vary a lot from subject to subject. What course are you doing?
Trent trent trent!

I'm in my first year doing GD there so feel free to message with any questions =)

Yeah definitely, I wish i'd been able to ask someone studying there questions last year! Its been really good so far =) The second term has been a lot better than the first term. First term was some small, open projects kinda transitioning you into degree level and more for you to get to know people and settle in really. The second term has been more focussed - first brief was to design a booklet about typography terms aimed at art foundation students. Next we were given a designer to research and had to create an exhibition poster based on our findings. Then we took part in the Penguin Design award and had to design book jackets. I'm currently on designing a magazine layout visualising my first year through infographics. And we were given a kinetic typography brief to do alongside all of that =) So pretty varied aha.

The tutors are brilliant! There are always at least 4 tutors walking around the studio space on studio days and they're really helpful and friendly. The space we work in is also pretty nice, though sometimes can get a little cramped with everyone in there. The facilities are pretty good, however (this is the worst aspect of the course), it can be hard to get a place on workshops or use certain facilities. They are working on getting that changed but for now you have to sign up to a workshop a month before and sometimes bug the technicians for a while to be able to use some equipment.

Thats the course side - Nightlife is awesome =P so many things to do for students as well as clubs though, loads of societies and chances to get involved. You'll be on city campus so you're pretty much in the middle of everything =)

thanks for the quick reply sounds really good.
good to hear your enjoying it.

yeah when i went to visit that was one of the things i noticed that the printing facilities weren't as good as some places but they said your allowed to use all of the art and design courses facilities which is cool.

the briefs sound quite fun the penguin book prize sounds good!

I have a couple friends in nottingham now sounds like they're living life ha.

i know your in your first year but do you know about any work placements ntu provide or how they help?

if anyone has any thoughts on uwe bristol or kingston that would be great too.

Also i checked with kingston i live to close for halls but i would move in to a shared house if i was to go there because traveling there everyday would be too much hassle, do you think i would be missing out on the overall experience if i didn't get halls?

In terms of your course though I have no idea...
I have heard though that the area Nottingham Trent is in though is a bit rough....don't know how true this is though

Hey,

I'm at Kingston at the moment on foundation, and have chosen to stay on for graphic design next year.
I can't comment too much about the course itself, but I have to say that the atmosphere is brilliant - down to earth and almost viciously friendly, and the one of my tutors who tutors BA as well is beyond fantastic. Chatting to people who are on degree at the moment, they're loving it too. When I first started foundation, most people were convinced that they were going to go elsewhere for degree, for the same reasons as you. In the end, 22 out of the 30 of us have been convinced (/brainwashed haha) into staying on.

Having said that, the other two courses you mention are also brilliant, and although Kingston is different from London in atmosphere, it is still pretty close by. Whatever you decide, congratulations! Maybe see you next year.

thanks for the response fward and crook.

glad to hear your enjoying the foundation at kingston.
would you move to the are then when you start in september or do you already live there?

i've heard a lot of good things about the tutors at kingston especially the head of the course rebecca.

Ah it's gonna be a hard decision, i think Kingston sounds like it would be a course i would like to be a part of the most but the area puts me off a bit where as nottinghams course sounds like a close second but still real good and fun city.

going to be a stressful couple of weeks trying to decide.
but yeah might see you in september.

where else did you apply? or places the kingston tutors suggested?
Hi everyone,
I am come from Taiwan and I also have the question like cozy boy about the difference in MA graphic design between UWE and Kingston. Could anyone have the information of both and recommend me which one is better?

Actually, I prefer UWE to Kingston for the reason of one and a half year of UWE MA graphic arts. I believe that ,to a master degree, the course of one year is seems to be short. However, the location in Kingston in London attracts my attention. So if anyone gave me some advice, it would be better.

Thanks for any responses.

Hey , how's UWE in LLM courses , I do have offer letters from kingston and UWE . Still deciding where to go .
Hi @cozy boy,

Congratulations on getting an offer to study Graphic Design!

As a current student studying at Kingston, I can tell you about my experience. Kingston University has a wide range of faculties such as careers & employability, academic success, and very supportive lecturers.

The university is also central for commuting and has 3 local train stations; Surbiton; Kingston; and Norbiton all close by. There are free university buses that go around the main campuses and halls of residence which can save you travelling costs.

In addition, Kingston University was ranked No. 1 in London and Top 5 in the UK for graphic design in the Guardian University Guide 2024, which makes it a highly recognised course. The facilities at Kingston University are great!

Students also find the university supportive and receive a gold star for student experience and outcome.

My advice would be to list all the pros and cons of the universities you have received an offer from and try to imagine which one you see yourself in.
