Yes. It's the top in the country, possibly in Europe for most of its subjects, and something around 5th in Europe for History. Plus, it's part of UCL which is prestigious in itself.

To those in the know, yes, very, but I doubt your average person in the street would have heard of them

Erm, SOAS certainly is prestigous in the right circles, which is what is important, as the cute cat tells us. However, to suggest 'it's the top in the country' seems to be a little excessive. Also it isn't part of UCL
...it's part of UoL. Yes it's prestigious, particularly abroad, but it also has a rapidly growing domestic profile.
The place is 2nd for law and out of all the unis of london has one of the best atmospheres for those in pursuit of academic excellence, most of the other unis of london have prententious students. though everyone is different, depends on the person

Well it is perhaps a little excessive as an overall statement, (it is certainly in the top 10 however) but it is undoubtedly top or very near top in most of its specialist fields - e.g. East Asian/African/Asian studies, Law, and Music (music not a speciality, but it is the top department in the country apart from two specialist music schools). And no, it is not a part of UCL, but has a partnership with it, where certain subjects are taught there in double honours, as well as KCL.

Soon SOAS will become part of UCL, just as SSEES. And then Birkbeck, and then IoE, and then all the institutes of the School of Advanced Study at U of London. And then there will be a superpowerful university in the Bloomsbury area. . . . All this is happenning in my dream.

SOAS students would rather die than become part of UCL :p: Of course I'm only speculating, not being one myself (yet) ...

SOAS are too left wing though. When I went to a UCL open day we managed to pass through SOAS and it was full with posters of the socialist movement:biggrin: .Our guide told us that It is even more socialist than LSE. UCL is too conservative to merge with SOAS:wink: .

I don't have a problem with left-wingery, as long as it's done intelligently. I detest it when it's done simply because it's the cool thing, and you get a load of people spouting the same slogans at each other. But that applies to right-wingers too.

I kinda see the left wing nature of SOAS as an added bonus lol as I consider myself to be somewhat left wing inclined.

And I do it the intelligent way, comrades...

I'm hardcore right wing. I do it because it's cool.

Is SOAS prestigous?

Its commonly referred to as such in the media and ive met some who describe it as being so but it doesnt feel like it. I think its probably far more prestigious to work there as an academic than to study there as s student.

To be honest, I doubt anywhere feels prestigious when you're there.

Fair point.
Just to mention that the other day i was asked by one of the Arsenal F.C directors where i studied and when i replied SOAS she exclaimed "Excellent! Thats a very good school" *shrugs.
yey!

Let's not get too enthusiastic. While SOAS undeniably has an excellent rep in the UK, it can't compete with ICL and LSE internationally. And while it comes 4th in the Guardian's league tables for 2005 (just after ICL and before LSE), it's completely out of it in the Times' (15th, whereas LSE is 4th and ICL 3rd). So sure it is prestigious, but not nearly as much as Oxbridge or other London institutions. [Expects to be bashed shortly ]
