I've just signed up to do 4 weeks in namibia this summer, no idea what to expect but i'm worried about raising the money! Also does anyone know how many people go on each expedition?

I was thinking of signing up for dat one too! it 's either dat one or the one to malaysia, but i'd like to do more trekking thru the rainforest so i might go for malaysia instead (i can't swim tho so i may have to wear a lifejacket n hope not to die!), but do u actually get to do rainforest trekking?

Reply 21

I don't know whether to do 7 or 10 weeks anymore!!!! (well originally the plan was 4 weeks but the plan changed). arghhhh! I think I'm right in saying that the adventure section is only one week? Seem to remember being told that, though it was 2 weeks ago that I was told.

Reply 22

adventure phase is always 3-4 weeks, if you choose to do it. In Malaysia you're bound to do some rainforest trekking, probably for your environmental as well as your adventure project. In Malaysia you spend a few dya scuba diving off a deserted island as well, so the hike is a bit shorter but you still spend a good few weeks in the jungle. The trek in Namibia is longer and across desert usually, it looks awesome.

Reply 23

so if I did 7 weeks, how long would I spend on each phase roughly? because I can't find it on the website!!!

Just wanted to ressurect this thread. I have just returned from a Raleigh exped. in Namibia and it was the time of my life, without doubt.

So, if anyone's thinking about taking the plunge I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Good thread. ive got a place for 7 weeks, was wondering how many projects that would squeeze in. Also how good was your spanish before you left?

After reading all the previous Raleigh(ers's?) posts and talking to a few at an information in Manchester, I really cannot wait to go now. Apparently there is a new information dvd/cd which gives you all the information you need from fund-raising advice to what underwear to take.

It's supposedly arriving this week, looking forward to getting it. I'm on a 10 week trip to Namibia in March next year, and I'll hopefully be travelling on after that. As I'd like more time away than 10 weeks, and I'm not wasting an opportunity to see more of South Africa! Not worried about the fitness side of things, back on my old training regime at the gym and I'm biking/squashing more than ever

Only thing worrying me at the moment is some extra large mammals and some extra scarey beasties! But, I've been told not to worry, as you're given great instructions on what do if you see a (insert name of scarey thing here).

Working full time at the moment, raised £2600 already and I'm hoping to do some fund-raising in December when all my friends return from uni. Oh, one question I do have, are there many people who travel on afterwards? If so, what do you reckon my chances are of tagging on with a few? I'm going on my own, which doesn't bother me, I'm trying to rack up some improved social skills for uni, BUT I don't want to be wandering around Africa on my own afterwards

Thanks!

A 10 week exped would allow you 3 projects, 7 weeks = 2 projects, 4 weeks is one project. Each project lasts 3 weeks and there's a little changeover time either side.

I didn't need Spanish for Namibia. I assume you're off to Costa Rica?

Hi Saul,

You won't regret your choice, Namibia is a tremendously beautiful, diverse country, full of wonderful people.

Most people came straight home from my expedition, but you have to bear in mind that I went on the July - Sept exped, not the March exped, therefore people had to be back for Uni. That said, several people (about 10) travelled on afterwards and if you wanted to i'm sure you'd be able to tag along. I think more people may travel on after the March exped, due to it finishing in the middle of the summer (Uk that is!!).

Don't worry about animals mate, just be careful. I'm not going to lie, there are risks (you will come accross various poisonous snakes and scorpions for example) just keep your tent zipped up!

Well done on the funraising by the way - top job!

Did you do much fundraising? I was thinking of writing to local businesses etc but was wondering what was better. Should I send them a typed letter or handwritten or does it make no difference whatsoever? I was thinking handwritten would be more personal and show a greater effort on my part but the letter I've got written has a description of the type of things Raleigh has done in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and is a page long so handwritting it so many times will be a right pain but I'm just wondering if it might deliver a better success rate?

I registered with Raleigh about 3/4 weeks ago, so if you really want to (which it sounds like you do), and think you can raise the cash soon enough (by January) then go for it!

I'm sure you won't regret it!

Cheers for the reply. Ive emailed them today but no reply so far so ill ring them tomorrow morning. So are you going on the Namibia one right? It looks so good. Ive got a job interview tomorrow for a full time job so hopefully if i get it, i will have enough money for it all. The 3 grand doesnt include flights/visas does it? So how much money will the whole trip cost - more in the region on £4000? I also want to travel on afterwards so ill also need spending money for that i guess. Ahh suppose ill just have to stop going out for the next few months! :frown: Nevermind it'll all be worth it!
Did you book online/phone? Then did they ask you for an interview? Thanks.

You can print out the application forms on the site, fill them in and then send them off. This includes 3 passport photos, photocopy of your passport and a medical form (which you also print out) signed by your GP (costs about £20 to get that done, the cheek!).

Once I'd sent my initial application they gave me a ring, had a chat about fund-raising and got to know a little more about me, then sent me a kit of stuff (including my t-shirt, a cd, paying-in information, flight details, etc.). I've just got to send off my passport copy and medical form now as I had to wait for a new passport (check your's hasn't expired as well!) and for my doctor to finish with the forms.

You have to pay a £200 deposit, and then pay in bi-monthly/monthly deposits into a bank-account which you will be given (Natwest). All sounds a bit confusing when I put it like that, but it's not!

I'm trying to save up about £6000 naybe £7000, I'm presently working full time and earning about £200 a week after tax. Trying to organise events and sponsorship around my hours will be difficult, but I'll try, I figure it'll be easier to earn by fund-raising than by working  It's been pretty easy not to go out actually, all my friends have gone off to uni and I'm working 3PM-11PM Monday to Friday which means I'm knackered, I'm cutting down, but it's hard!

The flights, insurance, medical costs (jabs) and kit aren't including no, they should cost around £500/£1000 on top, but don't hold me to that (ask them!). Anyway, I hope you decide to go, it'll be great! Good to know someone else will be travelling on as well, keep me company! :p:

Good luck!

Sound advice. I would add that a £20 fee for getting the Visa done is good if you're not from London, considering you would actually have to go there in person otherwise.

My flights were the best part of £700 although I booked onto Raleigh fairly late in the day (March for a July exped!) so they may be around 500-550 quid if you did it soon enough.

Worth bearing in mind that Raleigh organise sponsorship events that you can do. I raised a grand or more doing a 26 mile trek in Wales with a couple of mates, all I had to do really was turn up - Raleigh put all the leg work in!

If you go NHS you can get the majority of your jabs for free; I paid for my rabies and my malaria tablets at a total of appx 200 quid. Whilst on the subject of Malaria tablets, if you want my opinion buy the Malarone, more expensive but no side affects, whereas some of the people on Larium had extravagant nightmares and lots on Dioxycyclene (sp?) had burns on their hands where the tablets react with bleach, which you wash your hands with on Raleigh.

Kit can be expensive, try and blag what you can from your friends and family. Take the kit list with a pinch of salt, I didn't use some of the 'essential' items at all. Water purification tablets for instance; the water in Namibia is fine to drink I assure you!

PM me if you have any questions/concerns. Above all, go for it! It's amazing!

Thanks for your help Saul and Top Cat.
Im very tempted to book up the Namibia trip, gonna run it pass the parentals tonight and get their opinion on it. Ive also seen another project with another company, Greenforce which im interested in. Tbh it doesnt sound as amazing as Namibia but its £600 cheaper. Hmmm.
A friends brother travelled with Raleigh and he had a great time but he said he enjoyed the travelling afterwards more as he hated the way they werent allowed to drink on the trip... Hhaaha he later got arrested in Belize for being 'drunk and disorderly'! So tbh i think it was a good thing he wasnt allowed alcohol! He said raleigh are extremely safty conscious on the trip and you have to be prepared to accept that.
Got the job today, so will have enough money for the trip after all (providing i cut down on spending of course!), on a 3 month contract so looking at earning around £3000 for that, plus bonuses and may also do some fundraising as you suggested. Ive also got about £2000 in savings so i should be ok.
Emailed raleigh about places available on the trip but they still havent got back to me. Im glad to hear that Saul booked his trip only 3 weeks ago, cos some people ive spoke to are like - i sorted that out years ago!! So fingers crossed they'll have places!

There's no fitness assessment with Raleigh international, I went with them to Malaysia/Borneo in my gap year. There isn't a selection weekend any more, that's what some people are talking about, and these weren't assessments either, just weekends of outdorr activities. There is a swim test when you get to your expedition country, think you have to swim about 100m and be able to tread water for a few minutes. This means you'll be able to go to the deserted island to learn scuba diving as part of your adventure phase. Borneo and the whole thing was amazing, i was in the rainforest of Danum valley for a month, building a kindergarten in a mountain village for a month, and scuba diving and hiking for a month.

As the expedition countries go, Borneo is one of the least strenuous. The trek isn't too far because you do some trail work on the way, and the mileage is much lower than other countries. You also spend some time scuba diving on Pulau Mamutik (google it...) It's a good idea to do some exercise before you get there, but only because it'll mean you'll enjoy it more, you'll be able to do it even if you haven't exercised in years. The rainforest is amazing, everything about it. I wish i was there again. To see a few photos, sorry there aren't more at the mo, go to:
www.bugbitten.com/cez

What was the weather like in malayasia?
and how strict are they on that 100m thing?
i really wanna go scuba diving (does it cost extra?) and i can swim, but im not sure how far.
oh and how many others did you go with?

I'm upset now :frown: Just checked Raleigh's website and they've changed their dates for the Costa Rica expeditions! :frown: :frown: :frown: I was planning on doing a 7 week trip but from Summer 2007 they no longer offer it but instead a 5 week course, so I thought fine, I'll do the 10 week course instead but they don't offer one for the Summer for Costa Rica and Nicaragua anymore. So either I do the 5 week one or I go to Borneo to do a 10 week one but tbh I had my heart set on Costa Rica :frown:

Also, does anyone know approximately how much flights will cost through Key Travel, which is the organisation they use for group bookings just so I can work out how much I need to raise approximately as I know that booking independently flights to Costa Rica will around in the region of £500 but it'll probably be cheaper through a group booking, I'm just wondering if anyone knows how much by?

Borneo is amazing - you won't look back if you go there! Flights won't be that much cheaper than £500, i wouldn't imagine.

Reply 39

I know it sound amazing and I really like the sound of scuba-diving but I've seen myself as going to Costa Rica for over a year now so I don't know if I can suddenly change my mind plus in terms of fundraising the 5 week trip is £1750 and the 10 week is £2995 and seeing as my money raised currently is only £300, the 5 week trip seems much more achievable. But I wanted to go for longer than 5 weeks :frown: I don't know what to do now  Plus the money I've raised so far has been on the pretext of going to Costa Rica, although its from my school so I can't see them as being too fused if I change destination seeing as its with the same company so I'll be doing the same type of work. Plus with the 10 week I get to do all the 3 phrases but can only do 1 phrase and an adventure activity week in the 5 week one.

Also, the 10 week trip comes back on 11th Sept , which is probably going to be very close to when I go to uni, I think freshers for me starts on the 15th Sept. So thats cutting it very close. I'm so confused!

EDIT: Sheffield's freshers week doesn't start till the 22nd Sept next year. But still that's quite close...
