Interrailing alone? Your opinions

Hey...

I go to an international school so all my friends are heading back to their own countries for summer.....interrailing if you only have 3 weeks - worth it particuarly if im on my own?

Anywhere to avoid if alone....female too. Im a confident traveller, been to Europe many times alone and find communication and making friends easy. (if that makes differences)

Thanks!!!

I wouldn't really recommend it. I'm heading off this summer with one other mate to go inter-railing but certainly wouldn't want to do it by myself. I think it would be lonely and the chance that you wouldn't make friends is substantial. Its a pretty high risk venture but could pay off if you don't mind being by yourself for a while. Best of luck.

On the flip side to the comment above, there are advantages.

You said you are a confident traveller, so it's not going to be like you can't find your way around a train station or you're going to worry about timetables and the likes.

Travelling solo will give you the opportunity to do precisely what you want to do, go where you want to go in your own time.

You will have the chance (if you so desire) to meet new people at the various hostels that I assume you are staying at.

It could get somewhat lonely, however, given that this is only three weeks, it isn't that long; and just make sure that you either catch some sleep on the train, or/and ensure that you have magazines or/and puzzle books to complete on the long journeys where you might otherwise have just talked to your travel buddy.

You just have to make sure that you look after yourself, and that you don't put yourself into dangerous positions, and certainly take advise when you get to the hostel about what areas you should avoid.

Have Fun !!

From all the books I've read, it's apparently very easy to attach yourself to groups etc., and Europe is a reasonably safe place to travel, just use your common sense.

I imagine that during the summer and if you're travelling the major routes (between major cities etc) the chances of bumping into fellow inter-railers is very high, my mate went with his bro and he said there were millions of peeps doing it.

I'm also planning on doing it solo this summer, havent worked out my route yet, relaly need to plan it but yeah i'm a bit thoughtful about how it would affect my experience, altho I do have the chance to do exactly what i want to do. I've also learnt from experience that if you want something done, you do it yourself, all my firends are pretty unsure what they're doing this summer so I'm not going to wait around for them to sort themselves otu and put my trip at risk
i will come i wanna go just no one wanna go with me !

Also, just for the record there is a company called busabout www.busabout.com and they basically do inter-rail by coach.. and because it's a specific company for travelling around Europe (and has links with STA) it'll be a bus full of people around student age doing exactly the same as you (rather than trains full of anyone)

I haven't done either, but good luck with planning and stuff

This is a myth given by people who usually haven't traveller alone and/or are unconfident.

Thousands of people travel alone every year from the UK, you will meet people while travelling. Even groups are pretty welcoming to travel with them for a while before moving on! It allows you to be anything you want to be ...which is often great fun!

As long as you have the confidence to just talk to people, you will be fine  The type of people who travel are usually pretty open-laid back, so finding someone hostile is pretty unlikely.

I have done it for a week with my mate, it was very very intense, we didn't stay in the same place for long.

My mate is very picky about hotels though and I am not, so I am thinking of doing this on my own again for a week although I am usualy the organiser of such trips the furthest I have been on my own is Birmingham and I was bored to death on the train, luckily at New Street I bumped into an old uni mate on the train and that saved the day.

I am not sure how I would cope on a long trip from say Paris to Lyon or somthing.
