Are you a coal miner then?
I have a better question then why don't we believe in god, why do you believe in god? When you think about it you will realize that it is just because you were brought up to think that way. There really is no factual evidence to support god other then the bible which was written at many different times and by many different people. And because religous people never answer questions but just ask a question in return, lol ignore the fact that this is a question to a question, I will say now the rebutals to these questions:

Religous person: Well if there is no god how did the universe get here?
    Science: Big Bang

Religious Person: What caused this big bang a miracle?
science: The compression of gases in space

Religous Person: Where did the gas come from?
Science: It is possible it was just there

Religous Person: How can gas just be there?
Science: How can god just be there?

    Religous person: Cuz he's god.

Is it just me or do most of these threads end like this?

    God is dead - Neitzsche

God was nothing more than an out of date hypothesis invented for the purpose of crushing the working class into submission and allowing the ruling class to justify their position.
Possible; it certainly may have served that purpose at some point in its evolution. One line of thought is that the idea originated out of people requiring a cause for the effects they observed. They thus related it to what they were aware of - paternalistic and maternalistic creation, with the result of their thoughts being that supreme beings created them, as well as everything else. For every unexplained aspect of nature, a god was hypothesised. As more aspects of nature became better understood, gods merged and eventually (conceptually) evaporated . A new tendency developed, to encompass all gods under the umbrella of a supreme creator. In this incarnation, the idea now has an indestructable shroud securing its position in human psyche - that we cannot answer all questions, thus the unanswered remain a function of God.

All these ideas were spread by society, often with God inducing fear, although I'm not sure it was in the way proposed above. The issue of fear is certainly apparent in the way the kings and queens of western culture were initially proposed to be closely related to God and thus creating the illusion of power, infallibility and instilling fear. I doubt however, that this had much influence - as we've seemingly gone past that stage now. I think the idea served more as social control than anything else.

How true those words are!!!! Its so obvious that as the world comes to an end more and more people do not believe in God!!!!!!

So where do you lot of unbelievers think you go when you die????

Why is it when someone becomes very ill or dies the thing people say is, God will look after them!!!!!

How can people say when they die they will go to heaven? If you don't believe the Bible how do you know there is a heaven?!

If there is a God, I will expect to go to heaven (provided that I have lived a good life)

If there isn't a God, I will expect to go into the realm known as 'oblivion' funfunfun

HAHAHAHAHAHAH YOU ARE INSANE.. when we die , thats it, its over, lights out....... there is no golden gated heaven where all the good people go or some ocean of fire that all the nasty people go to. There is nothing, you get sick for many different reasons and none of them are caused by god.

Are you a coal miner then?
yes, i'm a 60 year old miner

what i was trying to convey in my previous post was the fact that 500 years ago people worked in appauling conditions trying to scrape by to feed their family, and the only reason they put up with it was because they were told that they would get their reward in "heaven". all they had to do to get to "heaven" was live in desperate poverty and not challenge the powers that be. not having had the education to understand that this may be a blatent lie they believed in God like everyone else did.

but now science has changed all that. its provided us with answers as to the nature of the universe. we don't belive in miracles any more because they can be explained in physical terms. we don't believe in God anymore because we're educated to a sufficient level to understand science. now that people have woken up to the scientific nature of the universe the spiritual world has subsided, and so in cultural terms at least God is dead.

Thats just as bad as saying 'you will go to heaven', you cannot conclusivly say 'thats it when you die', the most you can say is that it is your opinion. Stop trying to proclaim it as fact in future.

But that is there choice to beleive or not. And when the time comes if there is a god it will be him/her that they will answer to. Why not just accept that we all have different beleifs and be happy with our own?

Well, I have to say that people are rational and base evidence for their arguments on what they can easily access. To believe in God is to essentially become obscure and cut yourself off from rationality. I know scientists cannot answer many questions surrounding their theories as suggested by you. Yet, to many there is more evidence to prove science than God and heaven in my opinion...Religion is also a major factor in the socialisation of a person - it is natural and is often the case that a person simply wouldn't dispute the existence of God because it has become ingrained into them....for people like me, who haven't been baptised or brought up like this, this simply isn't so. Furthermore, I find religion as a whole to be too troublesome, creating more evils than good...the assertion of the Church that God's will has been carried out when many die in a disaster, I find to be perplexing when God is susposed to "love all his children" plus, there is of course monty Python's take on the whole issue!

If God is just, then as long as you have lived a good life and followed what you believe (be it atheism/other religion etc) then if you believe in him or not is not an issue.

You misunderstand, I mean as in we just die and thats the end. I take oblivion to mean a empty place, but you are experiencing that emptiness, whereas if you just die, your gone and nothing is left. Not saying that is what I think happens.
