i think we had this before? is that the research one?

i cant remember what was concluded... maybe it's too small to be big in research or something?

Wasn't it something to do with the fact that the Russell group are all Redbrick victorian unis founded around the same time and Durham isn't?

Reply 3

The Russell group is not necessarily the best universities, rather it lobbies on behalf of the unis with the biggest research output (hence Durham, St Andrews, York all outside)

No Oxford and Cambridge are both members. The Russel group are universities who do a large ammount of research.

A large amount of good and important research in areas where they are leading areas of thought. Can produce all the research you like, but if it's a pile of steaming dung, no one really cares

I don't think it's about when they were founded - I think Newcastle is the 11th oldest uni in the UK and that was founded in the early 1900s.

"The aims and objectives of the Russell Group are to promote the interests of Universities in which teaching and learning are undertaken within a culture of research excellence, and to identify and disseminate new thinking and ideas about the organisation and management of such institutions."

Durham is a bit teeny to be in the Russell group, in addition I think only some of the departments here are amazing research-wise.

New maths is being discovered and developed all the time...only now the average person in the street won't have any chance of understanding much of it at all. Even after a 4 year degree nearly all of it way way beyond me even being able to attempt to understand it, never mind continue the research.

The Russel group if just a group of universities which happen to be amongst the est in the country and some of those which the greatest reputation for research in the country.

It is not, however, a list of the best universities in the country nor a list of the best research universities in the country. York, Durham and St Andrews are equal to or better than many of universities in the Russel group in both respects.

Yeah, I know maths is being developed. I was in a funny mood, however. And hate maths!
