Yoga or Pilates

Hello,

Could any one help me in deciding which one of the above would be better for;

Muscle toning and definition
Flexibility

Ive been searching on the net and get the impression that Yoga is all about relaxation and pilates to do with posture and spine alignment.

Any help would be much appreciated as im going out today to buy a dvd

Thanx

Could just buy both DVDs. I mean i know nothing about yoga or pilates, only that they are a better way of coping with a stressor (im a psychology student) rather than pills etc.

Really dont know the ins and outs of muscle definition through yoga. Message a guy called 'bis', he'll know.

Sorry i couldnt be of much help

I do both and I don't really see much of a difference between the two to be honest. The main difference would be that Yoga tends to focus more on the spiritual aspect and breathing. It is still good for flexibility, strength and muscle toning though, especially Power Yoga, which can be a great workout.

Pilates is easier to do on your own. Yoga, you might need a teacher to make sure that you're doing the right positions etc. Pilates is also incredibly relaxing, and you don't break a sweat, but it still improves your fitness.

Dancers swear by pilates, and they are strong, flexible, toned people.

Oh. I don't know. It was just a funny moment on The OC. Look it up.

But on the subject of DVDs, it would probably be better to go to an actual class, whether you're doing yoga, pilates, or yogalates. There are some crappy DVDs out there that make **** up - ie. "Buying this DVD (only $1999.99 for a limited time offer!) will help you lose weight - excess fat is the result of an unbalanced mind, which can be fixed by rejoining the soul and body!"

Yes. Its excellent. :smile:

I like yoga, to unwind, and pilates, to tone. I do one class of each per week (uni work / paid work permitting :rolleyes: )
