commercial management & quantity surveying

Hi, i was wondering whether anyone was currently on this course or knew muhc about it. I am 20 at the moment and have been thinking about training as an electrician or similar job withing the building trade, but stumbled across this course in the prospectus. I am considering applying for the sanwich course for sept 06 entry. How have people found this course and what are the job propects like? Is there a lot of competetion for places withing the course and have a I left it too late to apply?

How would you rate QS as a career, does it seem pretty interesting? Have you enjoyed the course?

its actually really interesting, i was working in manchester on my placement on a £32m office block smack bang in the centre of the city. theres always a good laugh with the guys on site, but i guess generally, a job is only as good as the people you are working with.

course has actually been really good. as with most degrees, you dont use most of what you actually learn when you are out there but its still interesting and get you into a good career.

Hey l1ncs,

I am a 2nd year on this course. The course has changed a bit since neal did his 1st and 2nd years a couple of years ago

They are trying to make it more relevant to Quantity Surveyors and their role in construction basically. So they have taken out the more maths orientated modules (Building Services), and replaced it with Building Services for Quantity Surveyors, with the emphasis on making sure we are aware of where costs occur in construction.

The course overall seems good. Good mix of modules, some of which are enjoyable, some of which seem to be (and are) a waste of time.

If you are going for the sandwich course, you will need sponsorship, or a place to work in the industry in your placement year.

Even if your not interested in spending you life Quantity Surveying, you could do far worse than this degree. The course give you management skills, financial awareness, knowledge of the law, and an insite into how businesses run. So you won't be caught unqualified in anything you do really...
For the record, I believe it is now too late to apply for Sept 06 entry - at least through the usual routes.

Getting sponsored for the course was so easy, about 9 companies emailed me, telling me to come for an interview, each time it was with the HR manager of each company. I went to 4 interviews and i got 4 offers for sponsorship, sponsorship is the easiest thing to get as the companies are dyeing for you to work for them, interviews was just them trying to impress me with there company. I decided to get sponsored with "Costain"

Is it best to wear a suit to these interviews?

I thought the deadline was 30th june for normal applications? Obviously the earlier the better but would i have any chance of getting an offer if my application was in at the end of march, bearing mind i already have my exam results?
Also on the issue of sponsorship, what kind of sponsorship do you get? Is it a case of the company contibuting to living costs or paying tutition fees or soemthing? Does it depend on who you are sponsored by?

For the Loughborough interview with sponsors and faculty, 80% of people wore full suits, however me and a few others were in our normal most comfortable clothes (Jeans, t-shirt, jacket and trainers).

However for interviews with the firm i wore, black trousers, black blazer, black shirt and black shoes, as this is basically the same as going for a job interview. The best thing is to go smart/casual as i went, no tie and just smart and presentable.

I was one of those who went casual, didn't expect everyone to be in suits!

Got some interviews soon though, i was thinking im going to wear a suit for sure this time!!

What was the interview with the sponsoring companies like? One of my interview offers said about "numerical testing", any ideas on what this is exactly?

my sponsorship interview lasted like 20 mins, i think they just want to make sure you know what it is that you're getting into.

That isn't the CMQS course:p: We do a couple of short sessions outside on the grass next to the Elvyn Pitches, and go away for a week to do it there, staying in a youth hostel in the middle of nowhere

Did you have sponsorship throughout the 4 year? If so, which company? £28.5k is a lot!
