Dear AQUA05, what is going to help us all probably is a clue on where you applied, which interviews you've been to . And last but not least, what work exp you had and what the emphasis was with each Uni as per your experience with them. And not for the least, so lovely having people like you around here !!! I guess there'll be a whole crowd of guys to be happy to read a more detailed post about your profile as an applicant.:flower2:

I wore:

Smart trousers

Plain t-shirt

V-neck jumper

Plain black smart shoes

The technicians wear casual clothes anyway ... tracksuits, combats etc. If you go too smart you'll feel a bit over dressed.

Yeah I was worried about being too overdressed. Thanks very much for the help. Were you allowed to make anything eg models or get a gum shield?

heeeey there!
So sorry for late reply... i applied to dundee, glasgow, manchester and liverpool.
got offers from manchester and liverpool..
I got rejected without interview from glasgow without interview.
Initially, i got an interview from dundee but then they changed their selection procedure for international students, so they no longer interview international students for dentistry.

As for the tips right now..i would say apply smartly.
Go for the open days if possible.. ask them about their selection procedures.. check if they are your strengths and then apply..
What i mean here is that.. check for what they look for in the candidates when selecting individuals for an interview.. so some unis like kings & barts stress alot on the ukcat.. so you may want to make sure your score is high enough when you apply to these unis.. even like stuff like extra-curricular activities.. what sort of activities do unis like...so if you;ve done those it would be very helpful if you would put it down on your personal statement.
Make sure you got plenty of work experience. Its extremely important.

Tips for work experience
- get experience in specialist depatments eg max fax department, or say go to an orthodontist, or dental technician
- get at least 2 and a half weeks work experience
- take a note book with you when ever you go.. write down which patient came.. what problem he/she had & write down how the dentist went about it.. like treatments & stuff.. it would be very helpful during the interviews.. i learnt the procedure of the root canal..so i could talk about it during the interview
- ask your dentist about the latest technologies & advancement.
- ask your dentist about amalgam fillings ...advantages & disadvantages

Tips for personal statement
- try writing everything you have done (extra curricular activities ie leadership, etc)
-mention how long you've been doing it for
- voluntary services ie community work, charity

hope this helps !

Helloooo
so sorry for late reply!!
I applied to liverpool, manchester, dundee, glasgow.
Interviews & offers from manchester & liverpool.
Interview from dundee - got an interview invite initially but then they changed their selection procedure for international students for dentistry..so they just look up the ucas & made a decision.
Rejections without interview - glasgow.

I had 1 month work experience at a max fax department + hospital dentistry(same place), 3 weeks at a private clinic, 5 days at a dental technician.
As for the unis..you should do the research by yourself.. like read their prospectus, email them, go for open days & talk to them.. ask them what type of candidates do they look for.. what is their selection procedure..
I dont know you personally so what i can say is when selecting your uni..play smartly. See if what they looking for is your strength.. if it is..yes apply!!
Remember ..dentistry is a very competitive course.. im not scaring you.. i want you to be prepared.. so you have to stand out from hundreds of applicants who apply, coz the number of applicants outweigh the number of seats available.
So it is very important that your personal statement is like super amazing.
try getting as many opinions from the people who know you.. friends, parents, family, teachers.. the more you get the better.. keeping in mind everyone thinks differently.
If you have any queries or whatever.. quote me

Good luck!!

You have some good specialist experience, but try and get some (1-2 weeks) in an NHS general dental practice.

Thanks for your help:biggrin: but do think I could get away without it. I checked university websites about the wrk exp they require, and most said exp in a dental setting. Its quite hard to get hold of a GDP as well. thanks for your help thou

Try your best to get some primary care experience because that's where you actually find out what dentistry is about and what you're letting yourself in for. Also, it's a better environment to ask questions about dentistry and find out more about current hot topics.
