Bad Skin

Basically, I know there's a thread about skin somewhere else, but this is about food and skin. I was wondering, are there any foods that are known to help clear up acne? I drink eight glasses of water a day, but that's all I've heard. I'm currently using acne cream from my doctor, but just wanted to help it along a bit.

Thanks

My only guess is lots of fruit and veg.

That's my overwhelmingly valuable post

I don't think so, it's just one of those things you have to suffer unless you use medication :frown: Just the obvious such as keep your face clean - washing with cold water after, don't touch it and change your pillow case often.
Have you tried cutting out milk and dairy products to see what happens?

well, although this tends to be a rumour, it is clinically proven.
Cut down on oil, fats and chocolate. Chances of acne increasing are mainly due to this. Drink lots of water and eat vegies. If you replace triglycerides with minerals, acne should decrease.

That only works if you're lactose intolerant, but it's worth a try.

It's known that (proper) Chinese soup is very good for the skin. But fruit and veg are a good idea. Keep drinking the water and cut down on junk food.

I only eat cheese occasionally, and drink soy or rice milk (which are both ew...)

I remember reading that the chocolate argument isn't true. I haven't had any chocolate in a while and my skin's still not amazing.

What do you mean by 'proper' chinese soup?
get carrots beetroot and apple and blend it all up - it doesn't go to pulp but still
just eat it out the container - tastes all right and apparently is really good - plus u can eat lots and u dont put on any wait - lol!

Sounds repulsive, why would you want to eat that? It all has sugar in it so if you eat enough you'd probably put weight on.

According to my dermatologist there is no proven link between certain types of food and acne. His only advice was to eat reasonably healthily - however acne is a genetic disease (well for people who have alright hygiene lol :p: )...
I really don't think your diet can affect your skin that much.. obviously if it is extremely chocolate, oil, fat driven and you cut those down, it'll improve, but I eat a relatively healthy diet (loads of fruit and veg, nuts, water) as well as the usual balanced stuff and my skin is still crap. If it's really bad could you perhaps progress to drugs rather than a cream. Otherwise, you might just have to ride it out until you are of the age when skin seems to magically behave.
Iv got a friend who's in her mid twenties now and the problem has cleared up but she used to get very bad spots...in a ring shape around her chin. She always reckoned it was because when working she always rested her chin on her thumb and first finger (closed together in a circle shape).

I myself find that when im stressed out I end up touching my face more and that definitely contributes to mine. Washing your face and eating well is great if you can (unlike me!) keep your mucky mits off your face!!

Oh and please dont try that veg mix...it sounds ruff :puke:

my gp said that eating too much carb (pasta, rice, potatoes- staple foods that 'fill u up') can contribute to acne........ worth a try

From experiance, I find dermatologists to be at best ill advised, and sometimes idiotic.

Any foods leading to a higher than normal production of 'grease' or sebum from your glads will inevitably lead to bacteria feasting on this nice cocktail, and some entering and infecting pores.

Try cutting out the following:

Alcohol (next to impossible)
Orange and Pinapple juice (hard, but well worth it)
Fish, and red meats (steak, lamb etc)
Dairy (rice milk isnt THAT bad)
Foods high in oil/fried (chips, crisps, etc)
Junk food (chocolate and all that)

Pretty long list of what you shouldnt really have :\

Try taking zinc supplements - take a month or so to take effect

Steer clear of antibiotics, they alter your natural flora, and can cause irrepairable liver damage.

Get some neem oil soap.

Only use your hands when washing your face, nothing abraisive, ever.

Head on over to acne.org for a LOT of advice
g4ry everything has sugar in it really and if u ate enough u would put on weight but how much of my carrot cocktail were u planning on eating really mate?

also it's high in zinc i think so is good for acne.
