If we're talking ESU:

Two speakers from each side, 7 minutes each. Then floor debate, then 4-minute, protected summaries from one of the first speakers.

sorry who was wondering why his innocent comments get blocked:rolleyes:
Mace is on the spot debating.
2 debaters each team, one timer, one chairperson and judges.
there are 7 mins per speech (and the other team can interject by calling a "point of order" in that time. You can wave them down or let them speak.) Debates last around 45 mins so your going to get the chance to speak up to two times. the 1st minute is really talking about what you are debating for, warming up. the last minute is summarising it. You will be told when the first minute is up and the last minute is going on.
Generally you'll have... say 5 possible topics to debate on that your school will know about 2-3 weeks prior to the debate.
The school (or if it's lords) hosting the event will choose one of the debates and you will be told on the day whether or not your are debating for the statement or against the statement. So you have to come prepared for debating and justifying either side. Find loopholes in both arguements etc.

That should summarise it
