They don't know you had a cambridge offer, and even if they did they would still be likely to offer you a place if they wanted you. They will have a huge number of applicants per place (probably higher than Oxbridge) and its difficult to determine who is the best just based on a couple of sides of A4. There are plenty of people on this board who have been rejected by a university when getting into oxbridge while other people applying for the same course have got in. Theres a degree of randomity about it

They know I applied before Oct 15th though...

I think maybe tutors have said this to make me feel better?

Plenty of people with good grades will have applied for october 15th and nota pplied to cambridge. plenty of people who did apply to cambridge didnt get in. It would be pretty stupid to rejectyou on the off chance you might have got into cambridge

I have offers from both Edinburgh and Cambridge -. However my application was not typical of an oxbridge application so they wouldnt have guessed that i applied to Cambridge.

PS. i did get rejected from Bristol- - dont know why i am so happy about it.

I think the whole myth about durham and bristol etc rejecting people on the fact it can be assumed they applied to Oxbridge is ********, that's just what people with hurt pride say to make themselves feel better. There is no conspiracy.

Seconded.

actually, it did used to be the case that unis got really funny about you applying to certain other ones because they could see all of your choices. that's where the "myth" comes from. and it was actually true, not anymore though. ive got no need to complain though.

How random!

That's what I thought. Nobody must have applied for it or something, lol.
Oh come on, earth sciences is the talk of the town

Thanks for the help anyway, that's put my mind at ease....
One teacher told me that Warwick reject people who are thought to apply to Oxbridge, but I got an offer from them....argh conspiracy or not, the whole thing is a bit too long-winded and blown out of proportion for my liking. It shouldn't be a problem as long as i meet my cam offer  I hope I haven't offended.
I got an offer from Sidney Sussex, Cambridge for MML but was rejected by Durham. I agree there's no conspiracy though. Why would any university reject someone just because there was a good chance they'd also applied to Cambridge? That just means they must be very good students, and most end up getting rejected anyway. Different universities look for different things in potential students and universities like Durham and Bristol have more applicants than Oxbridge for a lot of courses. Personally I put my rejection down to my GCSEs, which I had the chance to make up for with my interview at Cambridge but not at Durham.
I got rejected from York, and most people at my interview had got unconditionals from there even though they were pre-Alevel. Just the way it goes i guess.

I have an offer from King's College Cambridge (AAAa) to study MML, butyesterday I was turned down by Edinburgh. Despite not being too upset about it, Edinburgh would have been my insurance. Do you think they didn't like my application/grades or, as some tutors have said to me, do they know I have a Cam offer? :dontknow:

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Same thing happened with me, except I had an unconditional offer from Oxford (I'm post A level). I got all my offers except for a rejection from Edinburgh - and this was apparently due to my lack of a modern language at GCSE. Despite my explaining amply in my personal statement that I'm learning French and have studied Latin, Greek and Spanish... So obviously they're a bit narrow-minded. This was for Classical Archaeology and Ancient History btw.

I haven't heard from edinburgh or imperial yet. should i contact them to ask them why they are so annoyingly slow? or have they simply forgotten that i've applied.

These days they don't know the names of your other choices, but in my time it was quite common to hear that an Oxbridge person had been rejected by Durham, Bristol, even Nottingham and Warwick. It was also sometimes admitted. Nowadays they don't know of your other choices and it would be deemed politically incorrect to admit to such a practise, if indeed it still exists, which, to a great extent, I doubt.
Hmm, well, I did get rejected from Imperial, but that might have something to do with the interviewer opening the interview with "Your reference regarding your mathematical skills is exceptional" and then me proceeding to take 25 minutes to answer a self-kickingly simple problem because I didn't know what 'orthogonal' meant and was too nervous to think that actually asking him might be a good idea...

To soonalvin: it took them till March to reject me, despite my being interviewed in October. Nothing to be lost from contacting them though.
