Yes, you can be trained on-the-job
so do you go to your local dentist and ask them about training? i found a college in london that does it but i also want to stay at college for an extra year to carry on two of my ASs
My friends doing dentistry at uni. She got a dental nurse job near her house and required no experience, however, apparently she told me there is a new bill/law coming into effect which means you must have some qualification/ prior experience to get the job, most dentistry students are immune from this.
Best bet is to go to a dentist near you and ask if they have any dental nurse positions going and how to get into that career area. Or else, jobcentreplus it online. good luck!
By July 2008, you will need to be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) in order to work as dental nurse. To get onto the register, you need one of the following:

* the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) National Certificate examination, plus 24 months experience
* the NVQ Level 3 in Oral Healthcare: Dental Nursing
* a Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Nursing awarded by a recognised Dental Hospital
* the Certificate of Higher Education in Dental Nursing offered by the School of Professionals Complementary to Dentistry, at the University of Portsmouth.

Courses include practical and theoretical work and you will cover areas such as:

* dentistry techniques, like anaesthesia and sedation, restorative dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery and dental radiography
* control of infection, including sterilisation, prevention of cross infection and storage of drugs
* caring for patients, maintaining records and mixing materials for fillings.

Registration – Transitional Arrangements
The GDC have created a two-year 'transitional period' from July 2006 to July 2008. During this time, they will consider giving membership and registration to dental nurses with alternative qualifications and experience. If you qualified overseas or trained in the Armed Forces, you may also be eligible to register.

For full details on all aspects of registration and acceptable qualifications, check the GDC website.
