MSN messenger is screwing up my life!

Is it just me or does anyone else find msn a hinderance rather than a help when it comes to establishing social relationships??? I've been hooked on it since I came to uni and over the last few weeks it has caused me so many problems!

I've managed to accidently insult someone because they didn't detect my sarcasm, leading them to be really off with me in real life.

I've made things really awkward with a certain someone after having a really deep conversation, that had it taken place in real life might have lead somewhere interesting. Instead we're now both avoiding each other, in case we have over-interpreted what was said.

Everytime I sign in, about 4 different people try to start a conversation and it's just plain confusing, and when I take a while to reply they assume it's because I don't like them/they're not interesting/I'm just plain rude!

So in conclusion, I am going to attempt to boycott it unless anyone can give me any decent tips on how to stop it ruining my life!!!

I think anything which relies on someone interpreting what you say in text can be a problem... has caused many arguments!

Speaking of the block function - it is a great source of paranoia. When I didn't sign in for a few days out of pure frustration, I get accused of deliberately blocking people! It's crazy, how on earth are you meant to interpret what people are saying without seeing their body language!

Are you sure you're at University because the way people are acting sounds very much like kingergarten?
Your friends sound paranoid! Just say you don't want to use it anymore because it's distracting you from work and use the phone to talk to your friends instead.

So true! Unfortuantly, a lot of uni students don't seem to be as mature as you'd imagine, lots of petty bickering as people are still quite insecure.

Msn is like a lifeline for me, because I dont have a phone in halls and to call people via my mobile would cost a small fortune. Msn's ok to arrange to meet up with people on but a lot of people seem to rely on it to build friendships. I guess it's less intimidating than talking face to face, especially when it comes to flirting. However that is definetly not a good road to go down, I have learnt my lesson the hard way

It's kind of ironic, a girl who lives a couple of doors down the corridor from me has just started an msn convo

Msn is also messing up my school life. I am constantly online, but, there is a way out. I never thought i would get out of the MSN spiral but sometimes i don't sign on anymore and it feels soo good.

Give it a try, or set yourself as busy!

So true unfortunatly some Uni students are very immature, and haven't got a sense of humour at all, but i wouldn't ditch msn.

I love appearing offline.
Yeah its a good thing. When I sign in i stay as appearing offline...that way I can see if there is anyone who I don't want to speak to. Although that said I can go online and no one will speak to me anyway!

Set your status to away all the time. Then if someone talks to you and you can't be bothered replying, don't.

That's what I do! Also, I sign in with my status set to appear offline, so that then if there's someone I want to talk to and someone I don't want to talk to, I can block the latter and then come online.
