progesterone only pill??

Hi, I went to the doctors a while ago about going on the combined contraceptive pill, but they said that because i occasionally suffer from migraines they wouldn't prescribe it 2 me as it would increase my chances of having a stroke (still leaving only a tiny tiny risk which i feel should be my risk to take....but i'll not go into a rant!) They did say however that i could consider the progesterone only pill as it is safe to take if u suffer from migraines. The only thing about this is that i've read that the disadvantages of the p.o.p. are that you can suffer weight-gain, spotty skin (eeeeeek!) and that you're periods may be irregular or stop altogther. It doesnt say anywhere though how likely these things are to happen. i was jst wondering if ne1 has any experience of taking this p.o.p pill who could advise me on the side effects and if its worth it?

Sounds to me just like the 'standard' side effects of all contraceptive pills. I try not to worry about them too much, they don't happen to everyone and if you do have adverse reactions then it's easy enough to try another pill.

I've just gone on a progesterone only contraceptive and so far, fine!

Consider the implant, it's cool

It's less effective than the combined pill, cus obviously it only contains one hormone.
Have you asked about other methods such as the injection?
I v v occasionally suffer from migraine and i'm on the combined pill...

My girlfriend is on the mixed one, but they have similar warnings, I wouldn't worry too much, it is just to make it clear to the user.
its not less effective than the combined pill, its just harder to take it properly which is why more women get pregnant while using it. I am on cerazette which is one of the newer pops, and has a 12 hour window to take it unlike older ones that only have 3 hours. I havent had any problems so far, it has made my periods stop but i see that as a good thing! as others have said, weight gain can be a side effect of the combined pill anyway, but everyone has different experiences. hope that helps a bit!

it technically is less effective, cus it just contains progesterone it can only inhibit ovulation with te use of one hormose - LH
Where as the cus the combined pill contan oestrogen as well pogesterone it inhibits FSH and LH - two hormones both linked with ovulation - so technically it is more effective as uv got 2 methods of stopping ovulation as opposed to just one in the progesterone only pill.
im sure what you're saying makes sense, and im no scientist but i think that the progesterone only pill doesnt necessarily make you stop ovulating - it prevents pregnancy by thickening the mucus in the cervix.

Its quite good actually. I'm on Cerazette too and haven't had any problems. Just my periods are longer now (about 9 days long) but are still regular. Cerazette is good because of the 12 hour window (I never take mine more then 30 minutes late though) and it prevents ovulation in 97% of cycles. I've been on it about 4 and half months now  .

Progesterone stops LH (leutinising hormose) being produced yeah? LH causes ovulation to occur, therefore if its inhibited you dont ovulate. Progesterone does also maintain uterus lining, but it stops you from gettin pregnant by stopping ovulation occurring.

 u learn somethin new every day hehe
The micro pill is only less effective if you dont take it properly, same with any medication. What you find with some of doctors is that they give you a trial on the micro pill and then "upgrade" you if you're ok on it. Not always though. Also, with the new 12 hour window, frankly its equally as good as the combined. I wouldnt personally want to go on it, because I do like the ease of the combined and its less tricky etc etc. And "double" protection is better than one form.

However, if you're using a condom too, you'll be fine.

As for side effects, everyone copes with the added hormones differently. I think that really people on the micro pill have an easier time, coz they only have one extra hormone to cope with. My spots are actually better on the pill and I even lost a little weight. If you arent happy on the first pill you go on, get the doc to change it. Some people take loads till they get it right.
I'm on Cerazette (I got terrible migraines and was told the same as you). I don't bleed (except for occasions when I bleed heavily every two/three months for a day or two, but I think that's down to something else). Cerazette's the best one I've been on. I get migraines still but the POP isn't causing it. I don't ovulate, so no pain and no periods.

The migraines aren't worth having in order for you to avoid general side effects, IMO. Those side effects don't always happen.
