isnt an livescribe pen also called an echo pen?

The new version of the livescribe pen is called "Livescribe Echo".
The old one is called "Livescribe Pulse".
So I guess you could refer to the new version as an echo pen as well.

I think a female equivalent of that activity is cooking, especially baking stuff, for girls if you like cooking then bringing a good set of unusual useful utensils will be a good way of making friends because you can make yours the kitchen where it all happens, girls will go out to the shops together, get all the ingredients and then make huge meals and invite loads of people down to eat them. It's a good way of getting to meet boys as well as boys will always come down if food is being offered.

lol I like how I've been getting negs for this presumably because people think I'm doing a sexist "girls get in the kitchen" thing.

When I was in halls cooking was a social thing that girls did together particularly on Sunday afternoons, believe it or not lots of girls do like cooking and baking and doing come dine with me style dinner parties in halls. With guys its more like "boil the water, put pasta in and find some sauce etc" so you can't make a social activity out of that but proper cooking you can hence why some girls will do it.

Some guys manage it too! I pos'd you, not because I totally love your approach but just because I'm sick of how this thread became a stupid neg-fest for no discernable reason.

The usual division in people's minds (boys like gadgets and cars - girls like clothes and beauty stuff) is so wrong though - loads of female friends are totally into phones, computers, etc. They may not be programmers but they love the gadgets.
Back when I was a student all I had was:

cheap ass laptop
cheap ass phone
vodka
beer
paper & pens & highlighters
cheap ass camera
memory sticks
facebook (back when it was a student only zone)
rail card
extension leads
old stereo and speakers
cheap ass mp3 player from ebay & cheap headphones
student bank account
oyster card
passport
pistachio nuts
shreddies
mascara
Tigger paraphenalia

I think we managed ok though I always wished I had a dictaphone or a printer for days when I fell asleep in lectures or last min dash to more obscure clusters as deadlines drew near.

Just to clarify, you're taking a portable computer to a building full of computers? :holmes:

But seriously, universities have an off campus application which means you have access to everything you need from your home computer which includes printers, files and e-mail so a desktop is fine.

On the other side of the argument, you get a laptop because

It's easy to take home - I know people that have had to leave there desktop over the holidays because it's too heavy

It's portable

It's light

It's very beneficial in case of a power cut. I had the last laugh when people laughed at my device, when there was a power cut

It takes up less space

It's neater ie: the keyboard/mouse is built in

It's an "all in one system" ie: it has a screen, keyboard and mouse

It costs less to run (around 10-20W vs 100-200W)

It's an entertainment system on the train. Could you imagine trying to set up your desktop to watch a movie on the train?

Admittedly, I tend to run mine on AC at uni, but that's because I have more desk space here than I would at home

Say you run a laptop for 12 hours/day for 44 weeks, which seems to be the average length of contracts,(so 308 days), it would cost

£9.61/year, assuming that electricity costs are 13p/kWh, and it uses 20W of power

Whereas a desktop computer would cost at least 5 times that amount to run. I've never had a device use more than 18W of power. My current devices uses 11W of power.Very cheap to run

Financially supported, how?

No, you don't lose the right to make suggestions - you simply say:
Computer
MP3 player
Mobile Phone

instead of

MacBook
iPod
iPhone

It's not hard.

Doesn't need a neg rep though :/. It's just sort of society I guess that these days iPod is synonymous with MP3, and the others are the most popular brands on the market.

--------

To those who were saying external hard drives can a good, large USB make for an alternative?

In the words of Arnold Schwarzeneggar - Quit whining.

iPod is not synonymous with MP3. It's certainly losing its generic trademark now that smartphones are beginning to make standalone players redundant.

And a high capacity USB stick is a suitable alternative if you're not moving huge files around, like VMs.

Well, it depends on what you really wanna use it for...

simply for storing porn, ehm, I mean movies, then external 3.5" HDD would be better and cheaper and more efficient.

If u wanna use it to make ur data portable, then cloud would be a good option. Or if you have desktop and it is always on, then you can use Hamachi or TeamViewer to be able to always stream them.

Big USB thumb drive would be good if u want to back-up all your important data to a physical location + at the same time be able to save some movies on there so you can watch it in friends house or something.

If you want to use ti just for the back-up of your course work, something like Drop Box would be sufficient.

There are too many variables
If you have anything else you would use it for, quote me and I will see what I can think of.
Cheers

Lol I wasn't whining. Hypocritical of you to say considering you negged for no apparent reason though, wouldn't you say? And it is synonymous in my experience. Everyone always uses "iPod" when referring to a music player (although I suppose they probably have iPods so maybe it was a misnomer to say synonymous when they are just referring to their own device brand?)

But okay cheers for info regarding USBs.

Well I don't know what the uses for. I assumed work but I was just wondering why everyone was suggesting them. I personally don't download movies or any big files.

Then yea, you should be fine with USB drive and you can then easilly use cloud or other web-based technologies if needed.
So in short, you should be fine.

I have the most and all because I said a winter coat and some Apple stuff and some things that weren't strictly "gadgets" - which just about everyone else has done. Sigh. TSR doesn't really seem to make sense most of the time.

There was no need for people to neg your post whatsoever but just ignore the rep system it's messed up how people can neg you if they simply don't like your opinion or out of spite.
Original post by atomsmasher
this. At least half of people my age completely overlook desktops for some reason, but they are much faster and (in my opinion) easier and more enjoyable to use than a tiny laptop. Assuming you already have a half decent tv to use as a monitor, you can get a better desktop than you could laptop for the same price.

good lord, someone with a brain!?!?!?

So if I have sky +, but never watch sky live, record everything I want then I don't need a licence?

Should be all right, but best to check with the licencing people

I think that must be true. I've noticed for example that some guys who have huge rep scores just go around making racist/sexist remarks all the time. "Rep" is a strange concept on TSR.

Or I have a brain cell? If you have a laptop you have speakers. 2.1 isn't necessary.

Whilst they're not necessary, they are nice to have, knowing you aren't getting a tinny sound and you get relatively good quality sound

I've printed off 14 pages this year and that wasn't even all for uni work. I'd say up to half. I was offered a free printer a couple of weeks ago but turned it down because I have no space or need for it until September.

I've had to print off around 30-40 pages this year, which would have cost me either £1.50-£2 or £7.50 - £10 if I used the printers at the uni. We get £2 credit every semester, so I suppose I wouldn't be saving that much

However, it is good when you have your own printer. You don't have to go all the way to a computer room to print off work

1. vibrator
2. vibrator
3. vibrator

Do we get to see the three vibrators in action
1. Paper + PENCILS not pen, because your lecturer will probably say "oh wait oops"

2. Any USB sticks ( free ones are better because they are free) You dont need a 4GB memory stick for carrying around a few .docs. Why would you need to carry your entire work around with you?

3. This 41E3fpCYI4L._SL500_AA300_.jpg As well as being a useful bottle opener ( and not looking dodgy as **** carrying around a penknife) it is a great conversation starter " Oh hey wait let me just get my lizard out for you"

4. Computing device of some kind. Some people take laptops into lectures, i dont because i do chemistry and it would be hard drawing stuff on ms paint. But if your an art history student and watch youtube in lectures they are great.

5. Cheap ass phone that wont break if you talk in it, do you REALLY need an iPhone? Really? no.

6. Hdmi cable, to hook up your laptop into projectors in conference rooms trolololo.

7. A watch. People being late...... don't get me started.

8. A hip flask. For those nights when you go to a really expensive place, then you can just order water with ice and top it up with your drink

9. Any ID apart from passport, i know so many people who have lost them.

10. Anything else you can get free from the uni during freshers week, mugs, pens , usbs ANYTHING
