Hi all i am going to be doing computer science at brunel too!!

went on a open day the other day in LT64 or something like that...

brunel looks good and everything is new, only thing i am not happy with is the programming content of the computer science subject, i wish they had more of it...
Depends what area of computer science you're moving into...its a very broad subject. I heard its not very well renowned for robotics but theres a very high employment rate for graduates going into software engineering related fields, especially around London.

I thought the programming content of the course was pretty good!? It seemed alot of their content is geared towards software engineering and such.

Thats great, I am plan to become a programmer in the future.
though when I was at the open day they were taking about the entire informatics depertment and thus I guess he generalised.
Yeah, they do a Networking course and an Information Systems course as well, all of which all share the same first year and alot of crossover modules!

That’s sounds good, I guess that also allows the opportunity for students to swap to another course if they find another subject more interesting.

how was the equipment and building in the computer science department?
Reply 11
The building looked brand new, you could even smell the paint when i went during the open day.

I didnt really see all the equipment, but from that i gatherd everything is new.

Hiya, I too am doing computer science at brunel next year. I did Foundations of IT last year at Brunel as well (was too lazy in 6th form and didn't get the grades). I just wish first years coming from a foundation course could get on-campus accomadation :frown:. All my mates from foundations of IT come from southall and so comute and don't relish the idea of spending a bit more to live away from their parents (gits).

I'm currently trying to get into the RAF flats, but that looks unlikely because on the form it says it has to be handed in by the 10th march, but I havn't been able to send it off yet (because I need to pay £200 at the same time, which I don't have untill I get my deposit back). Apparently there's still a chance though, so *cross fingers*.

At the end of the day, if worse comes to worse I'll have to find a lodging, which I don't really want to do but you know... what needs must.

Computer Science is in the same department as FoIT (foundations of IT) as well. And if it runs the same as last year, we'll have a BBQ on the wednesday during freshers week where we have to have this special super-duper ticket they give us... which they never bother to check if you have on on the day, anyway, so don;t worry if you forget it . And who doesn't like a free BBQ?

I went to pick up my stuff and clear my room out on tuesday. Some of the buildings have come a long way in just a few months. There's a big circular building near the sports centre (I can't remember the name) which was just some pillars and floors in september... but now it appears to be pretty much finished.

If any of you guys are interrested in karate, well theres a very good karate club, doing GoJu Ryu. It's run by Nathaniel Peat Sensei who used to be a student at brunel. I dare say they'll be at the fresher's fayre (maybe I'll be there too) sporting our swanky new club tracksuits :P. I can't wait till next year just for karate alone . I wish I could get back there more regularly during the summer. One of the sempai also runs a Jujitsu class as well, which is a good accompanyment to karate training.

Anyway, it's good to see CS guys posting... I havn't visited this forum in quite some time. I'll see you all in september.

What BBQ
Do you know whats going on this year for the freshers fayre?
Reply 16
no but JJassonn said they had BBQ last year, so i said if there is a BBQ ill surely be there.

I'll be living in ex-RAF flats next year (hopefully). And I move in on the thursday during fresher's week, which is a tad annoying since I'll miss all the introductory stuff. It's not a huge problem though since most of it I'll already know. I'll just need to get the timetable and stuff. If there is a BBQ though, I'll surely miss it :/. Maybe I'll give the accomadation office and ring and see if I can move in a few days earlier.
