Affect of alcohol on weight

Firstly, im not trying to lose weight, and a dont drink that much... (that puts my in the minorty then)

...but anyway purely out of curoisty, how great an affect on your weight does alcohol have, doesnt anyone have any reliable/sensable info on this?

Im thinking, i know a number of people who have put on weight havin start uni (both people at uni, and friends at home)
- Im sure its a combination of many factors, junk-food, alcohol, lack of sleep, etc. But i was wondering what likely to be having the most affect?

As i said, i'd like to try and stick to relaiable sources, rather then just the usuall

beer's pretty fatty, i think, maybe 150 cals per pint? Not entirely sure.
Like everything, just go in moderation, and you'll be fine.

alcohol always makes me lose weight.

If I go out on the lash the next day i've lost loads of it. and it stays like that.

it always happens no matter what I drink.

well, apparently you need 3500 extra calories a week to gain a pound, so that's 500 calories a day. so if you were drinking say 2.5 pints a day, at 200 calories per pint, there's your extra 500 calories for that day..

honestly. I think its coz alcohol dehydrates, but im unsure.

think your science needs brushing up. as if i'd bother making stuff up.
alcohol makes you put on weight. A bottle of smernoff ice is as bad as 1 doughnut they said on the Tv.

Yeah but that is no doubt due to the high sugar content of alcopops to disguise the alcohol taste. Alcohol is fattening, yeah, but not all forms to this extent.
Beer and wine etc is very fatty.

To put it into perspective if a pint is 150 calories thats the same as 2 large bananas, and about half the amount of cals in a chocolate bar. How about replacing junk food with beer!!

Surely vodka is almost calorieless.....googles......hmm single shot is 50 cals, so not that much.

I dont go to uni, but perhaps weight gain is a result of constant grazing rather than set meal times, i know whenever i go away i eat and eat and eat non stop and forget about main meals, probably causing me to take in more overall.

I dont believe i've just written (wrote?) so much.

there are 7 calories in 1 ml of pure alcohol. so thats like 700 cals in 100ml's. obviously ppl dont drink pure alcohol or theyd die but i think it shows that alcoholic drinks are always going to be pretty calorific:frown:

I never even thought of googling for this info, great post.
- Just had a rummage myself and came up with this basic table for one units worth

Approx One Unit
1/2 Pint lager 115kcal
1/2 Alcopop 100cal
1 single shot with mixer 100kcal
1 a small glass of wine 80kcal
1 single shot of spirits 53kcal

With a mars bar being 300 (as base-reference)

So basicaly although alcohol alone is quite fattening, its rest of you vodka & coke, sweet alcopops and the beer that acctaully contain the most calories.
- So if you want to get hammered and stay thin, hit the shots!
- Also, wine is barely better than lager, contray to popular belief
- Infact, bar neet sprints, there all fairly simular in terms of calories per unit

Yeah, you see this is sort of comment i kept getting.

[RANT ON] (hide)

Jenna's post did go one to calculate the calories in terms of pint per day.
But how can you say "you need 3500 extra calories a week to gain a pound"
- That doesnt make sense! 3500 cals a week for how long?
- If i eat 3500 extra cals, will i gain an extra pound a week, and extra pound each year? Theres a missing piece of info...!

"A bottle of smernoff ice is as bad as 1 doughnut" said the tv
- Again, this is all well and good as a very rough analogy to get you thinking, but what size doughnut?
- And "as bad as Does that mean if i eat 10 doughnuts im going to get drunk, or if i down a smernoff without licking my libs im going to get jam on my face?
- And if the TV told you that slitting your wrists make you lose weight, would you believe it? Would you try it? Would you tell a friend? Would they? AHhhhh

And "beer is fatty" - NO COMMENT!

[RANT OFF] (my god... that better)

Right, sorry about that.

I gota apologise to the three induvidual involved, its not just them, its this whole coutrys attitude to food/eating/weight it drives my crasy like you wouldnt beleve.
- The fact that they will beleave anything anyone tell them, and take it as hard fact.
- Instead of thinking "no, wait, thats bull" they think "ah wow, i dont beleve it, must remember that" WHY?

:wtf?: thats like the only thing i usually drink? i didnt think there was loads of sugar in them, i knw vodka n a diet (wotever) is appartently ok but when i drink vodka like that it gets me drunk quicker than when its just alchopops.
The liver is used to break down fats and drinking loads affects the effectiveness of the liver, therefore it has to work harder to break down fats = weight gain.

You manage to to drink alcopops without realising they where packed with suger...?
- Didnt you stop to think "Hummm, this tastes awfully sweet, i wonder how it does it?"
