It contains oestrogen and progesterone, of which the former promotes fat accumulation. (i.e. its the hormone that makes you put on fat from what you eat)

In some countries they feed oestrogen to animals in order to fatten them up faster.

I read somewhere that the pill heightens your sense of smell. Maybe that might help, or maybe I'm rambling on about something unrelated.
Pretty unrelated in my experience. I have not eaten any more then normal since I have been on the pill and I have gained 2 stone!!

As far as I know, its the hormones. I'm not a biologist but I am pretty sure they are responsible.
I put on 2 stone whilst on the pill. I was constantly hungry, even with three full meals a day. It didn't matter what food I ate. I stopped about 3 months ago but the weight is not shifting at all - I've lost about 3 lbs so it's v painfully slow! My apetite is almost back to normal, although I can still eat more than usual.

I put on a few pounds when I was on Microgynon 30, but since switching to Yasmin, which claims to be 'weight neutral' it's been fine.

I think the whole 2putting on weight on the pill" issue, is a load of crap to be honest.. Ive been on and off the pill since i was 14 and the only time i put ON weight, was when i wasn't on the pill at all.

I think it does increase your appetite though. But if you're getting enough exercise every day like you should do...then it wont really affect you at all will it!

maybe to do with hormones and water retention! But to be honest I have actually lost about half a stone since going on the pill (but still have that bloody cellulite;()
I guess it depends on people but I reckon that if you eats sensibly u should be fine! It shouldn't scare u off the pill, honestly life is so much easier with it, well at least if u got a regular boyf, otherwise be careful though:biggrin:

you can put on weight if you don't already have control over your calorie intake (food intake) so really it shouldn't if you're eating normally.
I've never noticed a weight gain from the pill and I've been taking it for almost 5 years now. Obviously in that time my body has changed but that wasn't down to the pill. It effects everyone differently.
Has anyone put on weight after going on the pill then lost weight after coming off it?
Ive put on about 5lb, which is a huge amount for me, seeing as usually I don't put on ANYTHING. It has all started since I've been on the pill and is a huge annoyance for me. I do blow it out of proportion slightly tho sometimes, I think. In my head, I mean.

Agreed, Ive been on the pill for ages and have never put any weight on, I think it depends on what eating/exercise habits a person has. To be honest I think the pill is unfairly blamed for weight gain, not in all cases obviously but I know loads of people on the pill who havent gained any weight at all.

I've been on the pill for a year and havn't gained any weight.

Sex hormones and 'fat' are both made from cholesterol based precursors. One theory is that by suppressing sex hormones, the cholesterol is diverted into making body fat...

I recently read that there is absolutely no evidence that the pill makes you put on weight... sigh... so i need to diet then
I have decided to stop taking the pill for 3 months, just to see if it makes any difference at all..

I'll keep you posted..

For those in similar situations, if you need to snack, or eat more eat stuff like fruit and veg as that means you don't but on as much weight, and still feel full.

I'm a guy so I get the munchies a lot, so just glug down a loada water, and I just feel more full.
If you go on the pill, and your breasts get bigger then I guess that would be (appreciated!) extra weight. If your appetite increases though, but you ignored the urge to eat,or ate healthy food to curb it, would you STILL gain weight in other places, even if you refused to consume extra calories? IE fill out generally (hips, ass, thighs..if the pill changes the balance of hormones in your body) Just curious cos think i'll probably end up going on it in the not-so-distance future.
Water retention, fat storage on 'womens' areas (the breasts, thighs and buttocks) these are due to the hormones in the pill. sometimes it can increase your appetite, meaning that you put on weight all over.
