Hey all. Got some info from college about an oxbridge conference day or sumthing like that. Has anyone been to one of these? Are they any good? And more importantly, do I get to bunk of college for the day? :p:

Is anyone going to one of these this year? I'll be going to the one at Sandowne racecourse, I heard there's 5 or 6 different venues around the country?

I went to one at Cheltenham racecourse. I wouldn't say it was particularly helpful, but yes, you get to bunk off school for the day, and at the one I went to they were giving out Oxford and Cambridge bags with prospectuses etc in

Why did you find it not that helpful?

There are others at Leicester, Cheltenham, Newcastle, Manchester (and three in Scotland).

It didn't, as far as I can remember, tell me anything I didn't already know or could find out by reading their respective websites.

I went to one in Glasgow.. it was only a half-day though if I remember correctly. It was quite good, and very helpful if you knew close to nothing about applying to Oxbridge. Plus there was free food!

I went to the Cheltenham one too- I agree you could find most of it out from the prospectus but it's always useful to meet real life students and tutors especially if you've got any specific questions.
It is also quite scary when you realise how much competion there is for places, they would probably have been able to fill all the places just from people at Cheltenham but there are conferences all over the country!!

I went to an Oxbridge Seminar at the University of Glamorgan recently.

Two young girls, who were Admission Officers for Oxford or Oxford colleges, gave a presentation and then a lady from Churchill College, Cambridge spoke to us.

The presentations were quite straightforward and I can't say I learnt much new but it was probably worthwhile attending all the same. The prospectuses for 2007 entry weren't published at the time either so the leaflets we were handed weren't terribly comprehensive or all that useful but I suppose it was nice to put a human face to the universities and to eye up the competition (!).

Went to one last year. Not massively helpful, but gave me an idea of Oxbridge's popularity as well as an opportunity to meet the students. Basically, a good chance for a day off school.

I'm going to the one in Leicester... it looks interesting, and I've quite a few friends from different colleges going, so it'll be a nice day meeting people even if the information we get given isn't that good. Tbh I doubt anything we'll be told will be any different to what one could get from the respective Open Days and prospectuses, but hey, it's a day off college.

TSR is a prime example of that fact that plenty of people get in with lower GCSE's, silly man.

hmm, unconvinced that TSR is necessarily a representative sample of the entire population of Oxbridge applicants though. the success rate for one thing!
so the two observations might not be mutually exclusive?

Hehe, there wasn't enough interest to warrant a minibus at our school so we had to make our own way there via train and then local bus... bit of an adventure! :p:

I went to that one in Y11... At the time I really wanted to do English at the time, and they made us leave before the English talk

The talk about student finance was good, and the one about university life, but the languages talk scared me, the old Cambridge tutor saying "We expect all our apllicants to ahve at least 8 A*s, it's very unusual to admit people with less than straights A's and A*'s..." As a Y11, that scared the hell out of me! TSR is a prime example of that fact that plenty of people get in with lower GCSE's, silly man.

Whaaat? 8 A*s?! That's ridiculous! I bet that scared a lot of people... Cambridge may be good, but it doesn't expect that high a standard.

Meh, I want to do English - hope we get to stay for that talk!

I'm not sure how we're getting there... our school's not that far away from LCFC (our college is in Oadby) so people might be expected to make their own way there. I'll probs be walking anyway. It's cool to think there'll be other TSR members there

I went to one at Elland Road, it was ok, got leaflets and talks on stuff like burasries, accomodation, interview dates etc. It was mostly stuff I'd already looked into, (it was quite late in the year, had already applied) so in retrospect it wasn't that helpful, but if you've only just started looking into unis/oxbridge, would probably be of use.

I'm going to the one in Leicester on Friday... we had to pay £10 for the minibus...and we have to get to school at 8 :frown:

Did no-one on TSR go to Newcastle or Manchester?
