hey

theres this series of ib study guides (only for sciences though) and the one on physics is so far the best text book - or rather the best revision book ive come across. SL and HL are both in the same thing. its called "physics for the IB diploma" by tim kirk. i dunno whether you will need it if youre in L6, cos í think its better to use it in U6. neways, your decision.

i use Physics by Serway....a bit difficult but it is a really good one....
ppl would usually use the Physics book by Giancolli ..

yeah i heard good stuff bout Giancolli too...for sl n hl

I use Giancoli, 3rd edition, published 1991. For those of you that use Giancoli as well, do you have a more recent edition? I've heard that a lot of people use the 5th edition.

Tim Kirk Physics is only a revision guide, if you need a book to study you should use Giancolli's book or Tsokos' book (Cambridge publishers) which has a 2005 version (I use that book)
Tsokos' book ? can give more detail about this book ?
the best idea is you get a number of textbooks and not just one

oh i have but im doing a level

however im using ib papers to help reinforce things and i wondered if there was a textbook that covered ib because ib seems to go into furher detail than a level.
well like people up there said before :P, there's the Physics IB Study Guide  or the Advanced Physics textbook that I use  I'm too laazy to go get the authors' names :P

My teacher swears by Tim Kirk's book like it were the bible, though im not too sure about it. For a start the whole thing is in black and white and its presented in little boxes scattered across the page. Not the most pleasing-on-the-eye book around so you may find it tedious to read through.

On the positive side though, it contains notes on everything in physics, seperating the higher level from the standard level to make it convenient for both, and also containing the options.

Through its bad points, I can still see why my teacher holds it in high regard.

Haha, everyone in my Physics class now calls that book the bible
It is definitely helpful - the entire syllabus compressed in that "little" book - I only work with that now that I'm revising.

Yeah I agree it's helpful but dont you agree that its not the most pleasing to read? Like come on, they could have at least put some nice colourful diagrams in and got rid of them stupid textboxes to make it more easily readable!!

'Tis true, must admit. But hey, I don't mind the diagrams not being colourful. If you're in the 2nd year of IB you'll understand. Now is the time to revise. Finito
really I don't care anymore.. My aim in my short life is to finish this ****ing Physics and get it over with. Never again a Physics exam after the 10th May... Though I'm doing a joint with CompSci in Uni. Too bad i chose that course in the first place...

Has anyone used the Physics textbook from IBID press?

If so, can anyone comment on its usefulness?

my school is using the one by Giancolli. I think it's a really good book with all the complete information you need for Higer Physics.
Reply 18
Giancolli covers a lot of extra matter that you don't need for IB but it is really good for explaining concepts.. but for before exam revision.. tim kirk is probably better since you really wouldnt be able to read thru giancolli..

this the most comprehensive book(803 pages) that follows the IB physics syllabus strictly . its not the best one but i guess u'll save tons of time cause u wont have turn back and fourth for stuff.
you can see the contents and sample pages on their site.
