Hmmm.

Well if you think you can manage a 10K or even a half-marathon with no previous training then go ahead! You might even end up like one of the 4 people who died at last year's Great North Run!

(Just to be correct on this, the runners who died were pretty fit, they died of associated causes and it was a ridiculously hot day. But running any distance race, without training, can be dangerous - hence the beginners sessions)

ooh, i may join the running club next term! i've been meaning to join it for quite some time now, i used to be a cross country runner but i haven't run in AGES now!

I'll definately join the running club if I go to Lancaster. Although tennis is my best sport after joining the army I can run for miles without getting tired:smile:
I'm not a great runner but decent. 10'000 m in 38 minutes the last time I clocked me.

Is there a tennis club at the university as well?

the tennis facilites are dogshit, the uni dont put nearly enough funding into sport

I agree, but it's part of the University stategic plan to invest more in sports over the next few years. Given the huge development of residences, it's long overdue.

You're more than welcome - come see us at Fresher's fair!

We might even be running some marathons next year!

This is an old thread but as the website link on the LUSU site doesn't seem to work I thought I'd give this thread a stir. Is the running club still functional?

Oh good. My favourite place to run is in the Lakes. Might there be trail runners in this club? Oh and is there an up-to-date website?

You can join here and look around. I've heard it's one of the most popular societies in the university and there is a lot going on apart from the usual weekly runs.

Hi all. This is quite an old thread but I'm really pleased to see you're interested in the running club at Lancaster University. I'm the current president of the club so if you have questions about what we do please ask. Essentially we cater for everyone who wants to run long distances, there's also an athletics club if you're interested in sprinting, we train twice a week during term time and have groups that are for beginners to county standard runners. We try to vary training with social runs, speedwork, hills and other stuff, all of which is up to you as we'll usually have several different choices at each session.

We also have a good racing scene, competing in local races, a cross country league, BUCS cross country championships and Roses. There are also a wide range of socials for the year ranging from barbecues to nights out and even very competitive games of laser tag. Membership for the year is £5 and covers all your sessions for the year. All you need is a pair of running shoes and some enthusiasm and you'll love it.

Yes that's our facebook page and you're welcome to join even if you're not in Lancaster yet. We're quite a good source of knowledge about running between the entire group and can obviously answer your questions about the club. I'd love us to be the biggest society on campus, it's not yet but it's a close-knit and friendly one though numbers start to tail off when the weather worsens.

The facebook page is our main source of news. We do have trail runners in the club. We aim to go to the lakes in summer term to do some trail and fell running. There are also opportunities to do it closer to Lancaster over the moors to Yorkshire for example is a tough but thoroughly enjoyable run.

Great stuff! Thanks for the informative post. You have scared me with the long distance bit! What do you class as long distance? I did once harbour a desire to aim at ultra running but the time and dedication to get to that standard is beyond me. I'm happy doing off-road 15K (or thereabouts) for now.
