how many over the recommended dosage is too many? yes i realise u rnt ment to go over that but im starting to find that 400mg of ibuprofen just doesnt work nemore. if it gets bad then i can be on 900mg a day and i know u r only ment to take 600.
does ne1 have ne advice on alternative painkillers? paracetamol just doesnt seem to work for me (v wierd).
I have quite a strong stomach and find that Paracetamol and Ibuprofen don't seem to work unless I mix them. Tylex is the strongest painkiler you can get that is over the counter. (I think you can still get it over the counter) Depends what's wrong with you really. Migraleve is very good for headaches and pains. Codine also works for me if I take it with something else.
your body has built up a tolerance to the drug which suggests you take it too often and rely on tablets too much. sometimes the body just has to be left to sort itself out, try not to take a tablet unless you feel really ill and gradually you will be fine on normal dosages OCCASIONALLY

easy to say when u rnt the one whos in so much pain u can hardly move. i get migraines and rele bad period pain. isnt nice. i hate taking pills but i sometimes need to if im going out or to uni or something. its not like i take them all the time. probly three days a month on average.
Go to the doctor, they can probably give you something stronger for period pain, and the migraines. Also you can take paracetamol then two hours later ibuprofen, two hours later paracetemol etc.
Go to your doctor and see what they can do. You can also buy codeine and paracetamol over the counter from pharmacies, but ask your doctor for advice first

maximum daily dose for ibuprofen according to the BNF is 2400 mg - this would normally be prescribed under medical supervision ( and would be 600 mg evey 6 hours or 800 mg modified release every 8 hours)
it's a licensing requirement that the brufen you can buy as a GSL medicine says the max dose is 1200 mg (2*200 evey 8 hours)
an additive approach to analgesia is recommended by the WHO
paracetamol and Ibuprofen together works well , as does Nurofen plus ( Ibuprofen and codiene ) with paracetamol -
co codamol 8/500s ( the type you get from a pharmacy) don't always work that much better than plain paracetamol , co codamol 30/500 is a big step up and is a POM
if it's period pains there are some supposeldy more specifc NSAIDs that you can get from the GP or some people take hyoscine as well as paracetamol / co codamol ( the branded product is feminax IIRC)
if you are having to take painkillers on a really regular basis it's probably worthwhile gspeaking to your doctor anyway - if this is just following an injury or period pains try some ofthe suggestions in the thread
It sounds like your body has built up a tolerance for the painkiller. Don't switch painkillers, you might get withdrawl symptoms. If I were you, I'd see your GP - before you become addicted.
if its for severe migranes, doctors can prescribe cocodinol, which is very effective, and completely knocks you out. however they recommend that this is taken no more than four times a month. also, if you're taking more than ten parecetamol per month, you are taking too many according to radio 4...

YOU CANNOT GET WITHDRAWL SYMPTOMS FROM PARACETAMOL OR A NSAID
withdrawl symptoms are related mainly to opiate and benzodiazepine (over or mis) use
actually you can have a psycological withdrawl (not the sameas cold turkey where the body is realising it's dependant need) from painkiller dependancy, as it was something quite traumatic my mother went through last year. try and get your facts right first...
im scared of drs and i know i havnt got nething serious. its just normal stuff and its not like im adicted to painkillers or nething like that. mite have to brave the family planning clinic soon tho if the period pain gets worse.

I know I'm labouring the point, and even if your not addicted now, your still misusing drugs. You really should see your GP, before it becomes more serious.

sorry, not in the BNF ?

radio 4 does not change the proven track record of a drug and it's doses
continued maximum daily dose usage of paracetamol may effect your liver especially if you are predisposed to liver trouble or meet the " high risk " criteria for the management of overdose

Kaiser
the O.P. isn't 'misusing ' drugs if she is taking paracetamol and /or ibuprofen within the licenced doses for a couple of days a month in no way is this 'misusing ' drugs and the addiction potential of paracetamol or NSAIDs is virtually zero and the physical dependenace side of things is not an issue at all.
