    What is the structural formula of the 2 alkenes obtained when 2-bromo-2-methylbutane reacts with ethanolic potassium hydroxide?

    Also, what is stereoisomerism?

    Stereoisomerism is the existence of molecules with the same structural formula but different three-dimensional structures; it can be geometric or optical. Geometric occurs when different groups are on each C atom in a C=C bond; optical occurs when there are non-superimposable mirror images of molecules resulting from diffenent arangement of groups on a chiral C atom.

    the reaction is elimination (whereby the hydroxide behaves as a base) so the two products occuring in a 50:50 ratio should be:

    CH2 = C(CH3) - CH2-CH3

    and

    CH3- C(CH3) = CH- CH3

    stereoisomers: molecules with same structural formula but with bonds arranged differently in 3D space (can be geometric or optical)
