The Army does have communal showers, but it's not as though you would spend a lot of time in them.
If communal showers is your biggest worry, you should find this soldiering lark a breeze.
It's not just the infantry who have communal showers.
Indeed - i can vouch for that, the showers at RAF Halton are singular in the accomodation blocks, but all the showers in the gyms are communal.

Don't worry, you get thrown out of the army for showering. Shower heads are just for decoration in barracks, water has never come out of them.
hehehe...
Anyway, this must be a wah.

probably, I think all armed forces do in their gym areas. I'm not too bothered, im sure people won't look really either, I mean would you want to be caught looking at another guys tackle? lol
lol, you'll find after the first couple of weeks it doesnt become a problem infact you laugh at it, because you generally shower with your unit, and you get to know these guys pretty well, i know from the TA, you basically and forgive the cliche, become brothers
How do you think women feel about it? Sure there are shower cubicles, but all in one shower room and some bases have clear glass doors. If you don't like the thought of people seeing you then wake up earlier.
Are there really mixed sex showers in the RAF ?

At Halton, they seem to make a really big thing of keeping the 2 sexes segregated.
I was based at an army base with my UAS, where it is most certainly not segregated!

As for the RAF, the bases I've been to have either posh en suites, or shower rooms that you can lock, with one or two shower cubicles to a room and about 3/4 rooms in a bathroom.
Seriously though i mean come on. I can understand the apprehension and all that but when you sign up to any of the forces i really think that sharing showers should be the very least of your worries. I would of thought doing your best to avoid getting a pool cue up your bahookie during a drunken prank on a night out would be more pressing or avoiding get shot, or bombed, or stabbed, or punched etc would be far more pressing. Or is that just me?
the way i see it is ***** happens learn to live with it and roll with the punches, being a serviceman/women dictates that you become more confident and less concerned with others seeing 'you' and more concerned with your duty, but then again thats just my opinion

In my barracks I've noticed there are some people who are really freaked out about this and will shower only when it's unlikely anyone else is showering.

Personally I've been in changing room showers after cricket for years so I'm totally jaded to the sight of another man naked. I don't see what the big deal is really.

No 1 Mess has a single set of ablutions on each floor. You get a shower curtain though. There's nowhere in the forces where you'll have to stand in a communal mass shower with the opposite sex, but you'll certainly have to share a bathroom with them.

Anyway, you've all misread his question. He didn't ask if the showers were communal, he asked if they were public. Which makes me assume he must thing the showers are in a see through room on a main road somewhere. Or maybe just fixed to the walls of his base so he has to nip out and sling his towel over a bench.

Or maybe he's concerned about members of the public wandering onto his barracks and using the showers when he's there. I don't know.

Advice wise, if you're worried about showering near mates I wouldn't bother with any of the forces; there'll be much more embarrassing stuff, much more personal stuff, etc etc. Go and work in the Post Office.

They're perfectly fine, don't worry about it. You might be uncomfortable in the first couple of weeks, but before you know it, you'll be walking around top-naked (as long as you don't get caught!). :p:

And BTW yes, I'm serving in the military, and have been doing so for ~14 months now.
