Abortions

Poll

Are you for or against abortion?

I'm just interested on the balance of male and female opinions towards abortion.

Okay, since I can't edit the poll, can we take the "for" option as being "for the choice of the woman/parents" please?

Right, bit of definition:
If you only agree with abortion for medical reasons, or disagree completely, can you choose "against" please
If you agree with abortion for non-medical reasons, then please choose "pro-choice"

Thanks!

I don't think anyone is "for" abortion - moreso PRO choice - having the option of them.....

Well it's always going to depend on the situation isn't it?

Exactly - I am pro abortion in many cases, but disprove of them being viewed as another form of contraceptive as some seem to - hence the options in the poll are ignorant to the true split of people over this issue.

First trimester- Should be regulated to ensure it doesn't become a contraceptive alternative. Permissible if woman's life, health or mental health is at risk. The husband or father should always be informed.

Second trimester- Restricted to cases in which the woman's life is in danger, she has been raped, incest or there are certain serious birth defects

Partial birth- Banned in all cases in which the life of the woman is not threatened.
Personally I could never have an abortion - and I can state that for definite, as I was in a postition in 2004 when I was sure that I was pregnant and I really had to make up my mind (my period was late, unprotected sex, etc etc). So I know for myself that I couldn't do it, and I do personally believe that it is killing a baby.
BUT I believe that everybody should have the option to make that choice for themselves. If abortions were illegal then girls would resort to back street abortions and that would be really dangerous, both for the baby and the mother. It would lead to pregnancy becoming a shameful thing, which it isn't. So I fully believe that abortion should be legal and people should be able to choose.
I'm for - to the point where medical science can allow the foetus to survive externally - after that point it is unacceptable except in cases of medical neccessity.

well i persoanlly wouldnt want an abortion BUT if i got pregnant now ebing 18 and going to uni in september i would have one as it would seriosuly ruin my life having a kid now - i dont like them but im not stupid i dont want to not get an education and career because of it!
Against - as ChemistBoy said, except for in cases of medical necessity, or if the life of the mother is in danger.

Depends on the situation. If someone has been raped then she's not guna want the kid is she?

Yes, that's exactly how I always viewed it.
But even now I'm coming up 22, almost at the end of my education and in a secure relationship, but I still do not know what I would do if I fell pregnant. I'm totally selfish - I wouldn't want a baby now because I wouldn't be able to get straight into work, and I am getting married next year and I wouldn't want a baby before marriage at all.
But then I am not sure whether I could get rid of our baby either.
I don't suppose I would know what I would do unless I was in the situation though - which hopefully won't happen! - No sex for me for at least a year and a half then!
i think girls should have the options of having one, in some cases its the best thing you can do. if you know you wont be a good mother then its cruel to keep the child. but basically dont get pregnant if you dont want a child..

I'd say I'm against, certainly I'd never have one. As a Catholic, I believe that life begins at the moment of conception and so to have an abortion (we're talking for non-serious medical reasons here obv.) I think is akin to murder.
BUT...I don't think I have the right to judge other people who may face circumstances I don't. So I think it's wrong to make them illegal, although the thought of having one, is to me, morally repugnant.

Two wrongs don't make a right do they? However if someone has been raped they a pregnancy test before the foetus is medically able to survive externally is more than likely so the abortion would be carried out before the foetus is viable.

But surely as a Catholic you wouldn't have sex before marriage, therefore would never be in a position where an abortion would be desireable, no?

Yep, I wouldn't be.

Yep, I wouldn't be.

Unless you were raped etc?

That really would be a test of faith, and truth be told i know i couldn't hadle that situation well. :s:

Well i'm pro-choice dependant on the situation, but don't bleive the government ect has the right to take that choice away from women

When I say I'm against abortion, that's excluding rape/incest/life threatening stuff. I dunno what I'd do in that situation personally, as you say it's a test of faith, What angers me is when people have unprotected sex, get pregnant and then say 'hmmm, don't think I want that one.'
well i would be against it but however if the girl has say been either raped or the child is in a serious condition and would not surive or the mother's life would be in danger then there's an exception.

This may seem a bit bizarre, but why is Incest so frequently seen as a good reason - its unlike rape in that the baby was unwanted, so just because it is one of the biggest taboo's, how does that warrant abortion?
