exercise increase

i am going to start rowing to get more exercise done and lose some pounds cos im a bit flabby.
what would be a recommended period to row for?i am averagely fit, but my knees hurt when i run so i cant really run to lose pounds.
does anyone know any good training plans.
i am kinda inspired by that guy who rowed the atlantic on that tv program--cant remember what its called though--does anyone know??

well more exercise = better results
so....use your brain

I am currently doing the 20 minute programme - work for about 20 minutes 3-5 times a week, gradually getting harder.
