Well, this is my first post on ukl, but it seems I can be of use. Basically there are two or three sites that let you on for free. All can be a little tempremental, but usually fine to do the basic messenger stuff

1.) http://www.e-messenger.net is about the best, but where I am have banned that!

2.) http://www.wbmsn.net is ok but support are very slow to respond, and sometimes goes offline for weeks at a time!

3.) http://www.msn2go.com is the newest, and people seem happy with it. Doesn't seem to like me though!

Hope this helps

number 3 is annoying, because when you are typing to someone but someone else writes to you, their window will popup and you will write half of what you were writing to them

Getting a web based version won't help, it will still have to commicate with the msn server on the ports that your school has blocked. Unless you can set up a proxy or get them to unblock the ports it won't work.
set up a proxy??

Most of the web servers use non-standard ports to bypass the proxy problem. Some of these do indeed work from places where MSN is blocked
