I think generally you are considered lovers once you are having sex. They're not mutually exclusive terms though! Once you become lovers, you're still gf and bf. I don't think you can equate a purely sexual relationship with no emotional attachment as lovers though.
The former means people have sex, the latter means you are in a relationship that is generally monogamous. Can be both, one, or neither.

Indeedy. Some people also use the word 'lover' to denote someone your banging when you shouldn't be - i.e. a mistress/whatever...

I agree with meepmeep and fragreaper.
the way i see it is
a lover is someone you have sex with, thats it
whereas
bf, gf is someone you may have sex with and you have a relationship with

hope that helps:smile:
To say "he is my lover" has a little too much of the Emma Bovary about it.
to me lover is what you call one of your male friends when your joking around and mildly taking the piss.

bf/gf is just a name given to a relationship...

lovers implies that there actually is emotion involved...

As shakespeare said in Romeo and Juliet, what's in a name? you can be bf/gf and still not love each other, and be cheating behind each other's backs...

that's the difference
i always use lover as a joke term...think its someone u have sex with!

Yes! Ice and a slice, moi luvver?
Lovers can imply just sex. A boyfriend or girlfriend *should* have a more committed, emotional aspect.

By b.fs can be lovers, good ones too!

Or the other way around. Or both the same thing.

If one is talking about a "lover" when they are married or should not be in that kind of relationship, it usualy means someone to escape with in a physical and emotional sense
