Exposé Ideas

Hey people, following on from Fleece's thread I thought I'd ask for your suggestions on what to do for my French Oral exposé after the holidays. I need to submit a title pretty soon.

The basic requirements are:

Must be about contemporary France (So can't talk about French revolution)
Must be interesting and original
Can't be about the riots as that is boring
5 minutes long
Has to be a topic that I can discuss and analyse, not just describing all the paintings in the Louvre or something

Any ideas?
Help greatly appreciated, may even give rep to the best idea(s).

The odd fact that the French seem to both love and hate America at the same time? I read about that in an interesting article in the Economist recently, was quite good. I mean they are all totally anti-American, yet seem to be more embracing of the American culture than any of the rest of us Europeans, quite a paradox.
Bonus points for use of the word paradox (I have been waiting to correctly use that word for years)

Ooh, have you got a link to that article? It could be a good topic...

(yes, I am lazy. I could search for it myself but I *do* have bronchitis :frown: )

You'll be able to find it on The Economist's website, but you'll need to pay:frown:
I don't have the issue on me, but I know for sure that it was the December 20th issue 2005.

You'll need to pay about 20 dollars to read it though (one month's online subscription).
Alternatively, you should be able to find back copies in a library? My school's library is rubbish and even that does back copies!

Boohoo! I'm a poor student. Although I'm certain Durham uni library will have it. Only trouble is, I'm going home tomorrow - leaving at 8am, have to pack today...:s: grr. Ah well, I'll just wait until I'm feeling better and then search around!
Thanks! Will rep you when I have repped more people!

salut becca.
hope you're feeling better
this is just some random stuff we've discussed in our a level french classes lately. something may inspire you..
*the state of french rugby/ sport ??
*bird flu :chicken: ~ though, obviously not just a french issue. but could be done from a french perspective
*l'oreal buying the body shop. ~ the tenuous link to france being that l'oreal is a french company
*french reliance on nuclear power. kinda a contemporary issue as current nuclear generators are coming to the end of their lifespan, and decisions must be made whether or not to replace them. (guess what i'm writing an essay on at the moment!! :bebored: )
* britons buying holiday homes in france and the effects on the french people and its property market.
good luck, x

Hi,

Dunno if this will be much help now but here are some of the topics people did for exposes just before the holidays:

CPE work contract, bird flu, colonialism (loi de 23 fevrier 2005), immigration/racial relations, marriage contract things, euthanasia (recent case in France)

Good luck with it!

No, this is all really useful stuff! My exam isn't until after the holidays, but I have to submit a topic before the end of the hols if possible.

I would be so grateful if people could provide me with any unusual sources (websites, articles etc). I mean things that aren't lemonde.fr etc

well what about all the recent student uprisings? You could fit in the past very nicely as well. Mai 68 and all that. compare past and present student uprising, analyse mostly the present but refer to the past. added grades for the use of past tenses.

Well, I went to Carlisle library (only library remotely near me that stocks the Economist) and looked for that article that Paddy talked about, but couldn't find it! Instead I found another interesting article on immigration, which is really useful and links in with my last presentation on the riots. So I think I;m going to do it on that. Now all I need to do is find an interesting angle.....
I'm thinking maybe "Les immigrés en France, est-ce qu'ils sont vraiment intégrés?"
