Why are "A" grades considered mediocre?

I would hardly consider A's as mediocre, I think if you work hard enough at GCSE's however, most people can achieve them in the sciences, maths and a few humanities, not so much maybe on English, some arts and the languages though.

A* 11.7% (subject average 7.8%)
A* + A 31.9% (subject average 23.2%)
A* to C 73.3% (subject average 69.8%)

^^Those are the 2011 stats so when you look at it A's aren't mediocre as only 31.9% get an A* or A and that's including people with one, so A's in my opinion are still good. :smile:
