While I am by no means an art expert either, I get the impression that something is only considered "art" if it gets some kind of approval basically, so that stuff which to the naked eye might well be awful (the eg I can think of is something like Tracy Emin's bed) becomes art simply because someone "in the business" so to speak says it is.

Again though, I'm not an expert on it, that's just my opinion.

However if you boil down "art" to simply a form of expression, then pretty much anything can be art I think, anime/magna included - if it makes the individual artist happy then that's all that matters, which is why I think art is a pretty silly subject to do exams in because it essentially comes down to whether or not your examiner likes your work, unless you test people's ability to do specific things to a certain level, e.g. drawing (in which someone's ability could range from dreadful to excellent) or painting (such as their ability to control colour and so forth).

In which case, as for the situation in the OP, I think that while Magna/Anime could be considered "art" if it is an expression of emotion and feelings, (even if I myself may not be keen on it, or consider it to be on the same "level" so to speak of other works of art), in the case of exams, where you're basically looking for approval, it's just better to jump through the hoop so to speak, to get the recognition, and then in the private sphere, do whatever the hell you want... silly that such snobbery exists I think, but unless anime/magna art goes mainstream/receives recognition as other art works do, it'll probably remain that way I think...

Wow. This is something that annoys me immensely.
ART CAN BE ANYTHING. MANGA/ANIME IS MOST DEFINITELY ART.
Tell that teacher their face isn't exactly artistic.
Check link in my sig, if someone said that wasn't art, I'd be so offended.

OP your teacher is talking nonsense. Of course manga is art.

Anybody who's read Akira would appreciate this.

Perhaps the teacher probably didn't want her to risk submitting something that the exam boards wouldn't/couldn't appreciate. I figure that in the teacher's eyes, it was best for your friend to do a conservative project and get a guaranteed good grade.

It is nothing to do with manga itself, it is probably the artists, or lack of artists they were going to look at.
It is easy to produce something dull, boring, cliche when doing manga as there is a lot out there. Sometimes students find it hard to go beyond a formulaic style and develop.
Most manga is used as a way to illustrate a story, usually quickly, and focusing on expressions. The real art in manga is the story - which is developed through many books. art students are doing an art piece not a book.

I did manga this year, my teacher didn't question it and it will probably do well. Teacher said A or above.

If you want to do manga you should look at woodcut and Ukiyo-e, make links between Japanese artists and themes within work. Thinking about periods in japan and how that could effect the artwork (especially the censorship, like the military beginning of the Shōwa period)

All the manga I have seen on here isn't really useful to develop work. Very bland. Though pretty, not useful to inspire new ideas or challenge a budding artist's way of thinking.

The answer is really simple; if somebody says that something is art, it is.

Everything is art, from Manga to Nuditiy to Random Crack in the floor at the tate modern. I get furious when people tell me Manga isnt art it is something from the darker side of the internet and the websites it can be found on usually have XXX in the title. When I try back myself up, they continue to claim that 99% of it is pornography but then again, who defines pornography? (thats another arguement for another forum lets move on Jellybeans). Yes I understand that there are mangas out there that are meant to be pornographic but alot of it is aimed at young girls and boys. If I had taken art and done manga for my piece, but my teacher said it wasn't art I would have flipped my lid- then gone onto show her beautiful artworks of Studio Ghibi! Sailor Moon! Akira (weirdst but one of the best animes I have ever seen!)

If manga was not art my friends I would have not purchased DestinyBlues drawing at MCM for £9. You should all check her out- this is the print I bought : http://destinyblue.deviantart.com/ar...-You-317203783 . I think her work is stunning!

Hi Iv done manga and anime for my final piece in gcse art I'm not sure if I'll get a low grade or anything my teacher tried to stop me but I said to her I'm going to get a low grade if I draw anything what you like so I ignored her and my portfolio has got anime manga in and some work what she wanted to do but in my opinion the work she wanted me to do might get me a lower grade because I wasn't good at it and anime was the only thing I could draw

so if i did all the exam board they want, showing evaluations, development on sketchbooks ..artists research(similary to anime style), mixed media etc..
and doing my final piece also based on anime style , will that be ok?..
currently, im in yr 11 doing the new spec, and my art teacher told me i should aiming for grade 9.. although she resented the fact that she hated anime for some reason... but i wonder if examiners wouldnt really much hating it as much as art teachers would normally do..so maybe (hopefully) isnt a problem..
i mean as long as you do those that are required and evaluate properly... but
anyways, i got grade 8 for my previous PPE exam.. and my final piece is a mermaid with a slightly use of anime style ~ish,,, if that make sense... but i just want to share the info with you guys, cuz im pretty confused too.

(Original post by acw151)Some time I ago, my friend was in the middle of doing her art exam at school (I can't quite remember whether it was GCSE or A Level). She is incredibly talented at drawing and in particular, has a talent at drawing manga.

When she was trying to plan her final piece, she of course wanted to do something that had a manga-inspired theme to it. However, several teachers took it upon themselves to discourage her from doing so, with one teacher actually making the statement: "Manga isn't art". She was therefore forced into creating a piece which quite frankly, didn't display her strengths as well as she could have if she'd been allowed to create the piece she wanted to. In a way, I could tell she was made to feel stupid for choosing to create a manga-inspired piece.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an expert at art. Maybe she would have gotten a lower grade if she had done a manga-inspired piece. But I do think saying that manga isn't art is pretty unfair and ridiculous considering that I've seen some pretty awful/grotesque pieces in my time getting called "art".

Am I missing something here? Or were those teachers out of order?

im doing anime for art and my teacher is very encouraging thank god,rly depends on how much it means to you and if your taechers are willing to fight alongside you, the reason im doing anime (particularly the Dragon Ball Series and other lovely shojo and shounen anime) is bcuz it has a special place in my heart and it MOTIVATES me, I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP YET WHY SHOULD YOU, DON'T LET TECHERS PUT YOU DOWN ,PUT YOUR SOUL INTO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!#
FIGHT FOR ANIME!!!!!!!!!!!!1
