There probably was, which is why smoking is banned in the building completely since September.

I'm pretty sure this is an urban myth but I've heard that theres a building/room at SOAS that the police can't go into or the law doesn't apply in or something and that its a cess pit of drugs, drugs and more drugs.

This true?

At least we know now where Elvis resides.

I thought that same as you when I went to SOAS, and asked one of our teachers who enlightened me on the story/myth: It is to do with the grounds being owned by the Queen (or something like that), so the Police, under some old constitution, have to ask the Queen to search the grounds if they ever want to. Of course, nowadays, the administration just sign it off, but it takes 3 days to pass through, by which point, people are aware of it, meaning that when they do search, there is nothing there.
Apparently, the smoking ban in SOAS was to allieviate these risks, but they are very lax on the rules and you still often get the odd cigar/cigarette/spliff being smoked down there...
that's really interesting.

kinda like a diplomatic cave.

That myth was there, but i think all the high people just said that to eachother.

now the puff of smoke doesn't get pumped out of the bar because its NON SMOKING throughout the whole building

imad.

My politics teacher used to go to the teaching college or sumin near SOAS, so hung out at SOAS all the time..
He told me that drugs are almost semi-legal @ SOAS, as the police overlook it

Institute of Education, is behind SOAS.

The drug prevalance means that smoking, of all substances, has been banned in the building.

It means that the entrance is littered by smokers.

If you want to study, SOAS is the wrong place. We just roll joints, drink pints and play pool. No one really studies.

I don't see why you feel so strongly bout not going 2 SOAS anymore, just coz evryone else does drugs, doesnt mean that theyre gonna influence me.

One of my biggest worries bout uni is the whole socialising and drinking aspect.. but at the end of the day I can mix with ppl hu are gonna drink - as I do with my friends but doesnt mean I have to or ever will indulge in alcohol.
If you feel so strongly bout drugs and smoking - which I totally get and agree with - then it wont make a difference who's smoking or snorting

Is that really true..I knew that drugs was kinda the norm at SOAS.. but is it really that extensive.
It doesnt put me off from coming to the Uni... just kinda makes me curious - not to try it tho!!!!

At least 95% if not 99% of SOAS smoke tobacco, and a good number of them do weed as well.

I'm in the minority that does neither drugs, nor smokes, nor drinks.

So tis possible to be a SOAS student and abstain from all.

There is a saying that goes around that whether or not you were a smoker before you go to uni, by the time you leave SOAS you will be...:p:
