Drugs

Someone very close to me is really into the cannibis scene he does not seem to be able to go without. He frequently buys the stuff and probably smokes at least ten-bag a week.

I really don't like the implications of that. If he only did it very rarely then that would be fine because I would know he was not getting addicted and he wasn't spending much money. He doesn't have a job and really cannot afford it.

What do I do?

I don't want him doing it but I don't want to lose him.

im not sure if we are allowed to discuss drugs on this forum... but nyways, if we are, i would suggest that you try to talk to your friend to try to cut down. and you should think about cutting down. a ten bag a week is not as bad as you would think, i know many people who have gone to that amount and more, the key point is that these things come in waves. you're friend will soon get tired of smoking up and will cut down. no one stays on the high stuff for more than a month or two. however, this is the crucial point, when he/she gets tired of the stuff he will want to experiment. now there's nothing wrong with trying things out but make sure he doesnt do the addictive stuff ie coke... very dangerously addictive. unlike others such as hallucinogens. finally i don't think you should worry too much and you maybe should cut down for yourself. also are you sure he/she actually smokes that much? people often exagerate...

Before you edited your post, didn't you say that you were doing cannabis too?

Please remember that there is a link between cannabis usage and mental illnesses.

Not much you can do expect me a friend and mention your concerns.
^^^I was worried this was going to deteriorate into mindless drug related banter....

dr_gonzo - he does smoke that much because I am usualy there when he does it. I hope he will grow out of it, it just really gets me down when he tells me to chill out and stop nagging. He doesnt see anything wrong with it and if he was sorted in other areas of his life then I could accept it as a (dangerous) past-time. But hes lazy, poorly motivated and has no money.

With a name like yours - you can't be taken seriously as anti-drugs.

Secondly the amount you say he smokes isn't an extreme amount - I know a guy who can smoke that in one sitting - but he now suffers from paranoia and insomnia.
My name is not a drug reference - really.
Dragons breathe fire, hence the smoke reference.

That aside, I am not worried that the amount he consumes now is going to affect him now, but I am worried it will get worse and that he spends more time worring about how he will get hold of his dealer because he has no phone credit than trying to get a decent job.
And I did say he smokes at least that per week, he often has that in one day.

The amount he smokes isnt that much. i would only worry if it is affecting school/uni work, and relationships, or he is stealing to fund his habit. cannabis is not addictive, but i think it can be a very hard habit to break. tell him that although you know hes not smoking it that much now, maybe it would be a good idea to cut down, before he starts smoking a lot of it.
there is also the effect that it may have on his mental health, although i dont think its that likely to have to much of an effect, the research is not really conclusive on this yet, from what ive heard.

cannabis is not addictive

It may not be physically addictive but i have no doubt its mentally addictive.
I know it is, I have 'friends' who cannot go half a day without one to "help [them] chill out". Like they really have anything to be stressed about.

You're going quite over the top mate, how are you going to lose him? I'm sure you know how safe the drug physically is. And mentally is very debatable.
If he cant afford it how can he smoke so much? And, a 10 bag a week really is nothing at all, i smoke that a day, but lets not get into that.
Aslong as he keeps up with his work etc and goes out then there is nothing wrong if he's sure that he feels ok.
And the addiction part, most kids(12-18) who smoke will say theyre 'addicted' to it, but really, the drug is not physically addictive and thats a 100% fact, if someone wants to stop they can relatively easily with a little withdrawel(nothing compared to nicotine may i add)
Though some people may seem really addicted, its just their personality.
well, I dont want his personality being addicted either. I don't want him thinking he needs it, whether he does or doesnt, because he can be very weak willed, esp over this.

He can afford it in the sense that if he earns £100, he will prob not work for a week (he does load-in, load-out jobs for gigs) and will spend £10 on fags, £50 on his car, £20 on food and random stuff and £20 in weed, if not more. It doesnt occur to him to not drive around the village, but walk, not smoke, not do weed and let his dad stock the fridge up rather than going and getting chips.

And I think it is affecting him. He seems lazier and more "monged" out than ever. He gets irritable very easily and needs a joint to chill out. he never used to be this needy.

a tenbag a week is nothing!!! haha.
He spends ten quid a week on cannabis and you're complaining?
This is a small joint a day.

He would spend more if he was on a 5 a day cigarette habit.

LOL a teenth a week lmao. Mate whats the problem, i know people that smoke twice that every night. Its practicaly harmless if you smoke that little and half the population (of students) does it anyway.
I did say at least.... and I also said that he can smoke that in a day. He frequently smokes FAR more.

He cannot afford it and the more he smokes, the less he wants to get a job. He has a lot of skill and potential and I cannot sit by and watch him waste it.

He is on a "5 a day" cigarette habit. But he will never stop smoking fags if he doesnt stop smoking weed as well.
And ten quid is a big deal. He doesnt have a tenner a week to spend most of the time! He manages to get mates to loan him money or get his parents to give him petrol money which he spends on weed.

Mate why are you worrying?
If hes skanking 10ers off people/parents to buy weed well thats his choice and his loss, stop focusing on weed and take a look at his life, he obviously needs a job.
Theres no chemical in weed that when smoked makes you think 'Im not getting a job' far from it, infact the opposite for me, i need money to be able to buy any in the first place. He just sounds like a lazy bastard and weed fits into that lifestyle great.
If you want to help him get him a job / something to do in his life, thats the only way.

It is the spending beyond his means that is wrong. Not the fact he indulges in mild cannabis use.
Would you have started a thread if he was buying a bottle of vodka a week or buying 4 or 5 pints a week?
