GNVQs are supposedly worth 4 GCSEs and BTECs are supposedly worth 1, 2 or 3 A-levels depending on whether you do the Award, Certificate or Diploma. Not many people recognise them as such though because they're vocational as opposed to academic and therefore not really comparable.

ahh i see,

no offence to anyone who does these qualifications on this forum but I think tha this is unfair on AS Level students because 'Joe Bloggs' who sat at the back of the classroom flicking bits of rubber at the teacher and got a total of 2 GCSE's at Grade E have a chance to save themselves with these 'crappy' qualifications while I worked my ass off to get my GCSE's and they get the same treatment as me, and they now get to go to university! - how unfair is that

They won't really get the same treatment though. GNVQs won't get them to university because they're only GCSE equivalents. A BTEC Diploma or Certificate, or Award plus an A-level, might but only for vocational courses at low ranked universities. For academic courses at decent universities, you need GCSEs and A-levels.

With BTEC's sometimes they can be better for getting into employment. Take for example performing arts. I am considering taking this next year because I want to study technical theatre. For me this is better than A levels because it reflects the practical nature of drama school and will prepare me better for it. Some BTEC's are enough to get you a job - without going to university. I think the point of BTEC's is to get you to where you want to go - that for alot of people may not be university.

It is well unfair my college offers AVCE double drama! U actually need no qualifications to get on the course! Like we need people like that around! Fair enough people who are good at drama but not people who are awful and were trouble makers at school! For any other subject but this u have to have at least 4 C grades on top of at least Bs in the subjects you take! Prime example a girl who got 1 A-C grade at GCSE got onto do Double Drama and Performance Studies and ended up dropping out cos its too hard! These qualifications should not be offered at an academic 6 form!
